Abolishing contractualization to affect BPO industry
The Department of Labor and Employment has warned the next Philippine president that abolishing all forms of contractual employment will affect industries that are project-based or temporary by nature, such as business process outsourcing (BPO). Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz issued the warning in response to the unanimous position of presidential candidates to put an end to contractual employment in the country. Baldoz urged candidates to clarify if their position covers both legitimate and illegal forms of the work scheme. Those legitimate independent subcontracting contracts include the jobs for overseas Filipino workers and BPO workers. According to the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines, around half of country’s 67.1 million workers are engaged in contractualization.

Lawson plans 500 outlets in Philippines, targets BPO offices

Japanese convenience store chain Lawson is expanding in the Philippines with eye on office spaces that have outsourcing companies as tenants. Lawson and its Philippine partner, supermarket operator Puregold Price Club, are developing a franchising formula and will test the model in late 2016. According to John Hao, the investor relations head of Puregold, PG Lawson will partner with independent property developers to gain access to office spaces with tenants like BPO companies that operate 24/7. PG Lawson has set a medium-term target of opening 500 outlets in the Philippines by 2020. Convenience stores are now riding high on the rapid growth of the country's BPO industry by setting up stores near IT parks or in buildings occupied by outsourcing companies.

World Bank expects Philippine BPO revenue of USD35bn in 2018
The World Bank expects the Philippine business process outsourcing (BPO) industry to post average revenue growth of 14.8% to reach USD35bn in 2018. In its newly launched April 2016 ‘East Asia and Pacific Economic Update’ report, the World Bank expects the country's BPO revenue to surpass the projected value of remittances, which are about USD34bn, by 2018. The report further adds that BPO will continue to be a key driver of the country's services sector. The World Bank maintained its GDP growth forecast for the Philippine economy at 6.4% this year, lower than the government's target of 6.8% to 7.8% but much higher than the 5.8% growth experienced in 2015. The risks to the economy, however, include the slowdown of remittances from oil-exporting countries and lower net exports due to weak external demand.

BPO sector lifts office rents in Manila – JLL

Property consultancy firm JLL has said in its latest report that growth in the offshoring and outsourcing sector in the Philippines together with new completions lifted office rents in Manila by 0.9% in Q4 2015. However, JLL stressed that despite the increase in office rental, overall rents in the prime Makati central business district remain highly competitive compared with other cities in Asia-Pacific. JLL said office rentals in most Southeast Asian cities declined in Q4 2015 due to the economic slowdown across the ASEAN region. Rents declined more severely in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta in Q4 than in the previous quarter. Bangkok and Manila were among the few cities in the region to post increases in office rentals in the last quarter of last year, JLL said.

Philippines in top 10 of world's top outsourcing destinations – AT Kearney.

The Philippines continues to be one of the world's biggest outsourcing destinations in terms of financial attractions and business environment, a study published by London-based consulting firm AT Kearney showed. According to the study, India is the world's top outsourcing destination out of the 55 countries analyzed. India is joined by China, Malaysia, Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico, Chile, and Poland in the top 10 list for 2016, the India Times has reported. Out of the countries surveyed, however, India and the Philippines are still top of mind when it comes to offshoring, according to AT Kearney's Communications, Media and Technology practice partner Nikolai Dobberstien. He also mentioned two Philippines cities - Bacolod and Iloilo - as among the tier 3 locations that global outsourcing companies are looking at as they plan to setup shop in the country.
