Maundy Thursday
Basically, it’s the day of the Passover. The last day the disciples would sit together with Jesus before his crucifixion. But let me tell you… it’s so much more.
That particular day, Jesus broke bread with the disciples and they took communion. Sounds about right to us, but think about what the disciples must have been thinking. Let me explain…
In Jewish culture, when a man proposes to a woman, they don’t exchange rings, but rather they partake in communion. The groom vows to give his life for his bride. In the mean time, he leaves the bride to return to his home town to where his parents live. The groom builds on to his father’s house (which is referred to as a mansion) and this is where the bride and groom will live when the house is finished and the groom returns to get his bride. While the groom is gone, he sends his “best man” to relay messages on the progress to his bride to be. The bride has no idea when the house will be completed, but she awaits patiently for his return and speaks often to the best man.
Now back to the Passover.
On this day, Jesus had communion with his disciples. Little did they know on that day that He would vow to give his life for them. That He was going to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house where there are many mansions. Even though he must leave them for a little while, He will send a Comforter— a “best man” to relay messages to them so that they have a line of communication to Him and on the day the house is completed, Jesus can return for them and bring them to His Father’s house where they will be together forever.
The Passover was the engagement ceremony of the day Jesus proposed to the world. He laid down His life for us and is preparing a place for us and on the day unknown He will return to bring us home.
