⚖️ Retrenchment ≠ automatic termination without rules

Businesses may close or scale down operations—but under labor law, retrenchment must be legitimate, necessary, and compliant.

📌 Key requirements you shouldn’t miss:
• 30-day prior notice to the employee
• 30-day prior notice to DOLE
• Payment of separation pay (as required by law)
• Proof that substantial losses are real, actual, and documented
• Not just claimed losses or a subterfuge to avoid obligations

💡 Retrenchment is allowed—but it must be in good faith, with due process, and solid evidence.

Ghosting but make it 1964.

If you think getting ghosted after a date is bad, imagine getting ghosted 2 DAYS before your wedding. 💍👻

In Wassmer v. Velez, everything was already set: marriage license secured, invitations sent, dresses and gifts ready, and guests preparing for the big day.

Then the groom drops a note:
“Will have to postpone wedding — My mother opposes it…”

He flies out, sends one last reassuring telegram (“Nothing changed, rest assured returning soon”), and then disappears completely…and when we say telegram, we don’t mean TG but the OG wire telegram of the 60s.

The Supreme Court held: you can’t be forced to marry, BUT “ghosting” someone in this humiliating and public way—after all the preparation and expense—makes you liable for damages. ⚖️

Lesson: ending a relationship is one thing. Disappearing after making major commitments is another.

It is meant to protect workers from sudden loss of income and arbitrary termination.

But the workplace today looks very different from what it did decades ago. More Filipinos are working as freelancers, project-based hires, or platform workers. Job titles have become more fluid, and contracts are often crafted in ways that seem to place workers outside the reach of traditional labor protections.
