Noise Cancelling 101
First off, there are two broad types of noise cancellation – one in the microphone(s) and one in the headphones themselves. The first type helps the person on the other end of the line to hear your voice instead of the ruckus in the bar you’re calling from. This is where we will focus our attention into since our goal here is to have cancel our background noises as much as possible.
The second type protects you – the wearer – so that you aren’t disturbed by that same bar noise.
Understanding How Proximity Effects Sound
What type of noise are you trying to cancel? Some types of noise can be filtered out easily. With other types of noise, it’s best to try avoiding it hitting the microphone at all.
When the microphone is close to your mouth then you can turn down the volume and hence the background noise is also turned down.
If you are in video chat you might not want to have a usb microphone visible on your screen. Or you might be ok with that.
