Since 1898, the Filipino people have carried the legacy of a freedom won through sacrifice, courage, and unwavering patriotism. Today, as we commemorate Philippine Independence Day, we honor the heroes who stood against colonial rule and fought for the right of Filipinos to govern their own nation. Their bravery laid the foundation of the liberties and opportunities we enjoy today.
The freedom we celebrate was never freely given. It was earned through the blood, determination, and collective struggle of countless Filipinos who believed that the nation deserved dignity and self-determination. Their stories continue to remind us that love for country is measured not only by words, but also by action and sacrifice.
As beneficiaries of their struggle, we must never take our independence for granted. While some may choose surrender over responsibility or become indifferent to the challenges facing our nation, we must remember that freedom is preserved only when people are willing to defend it. The sovereignty our heroes fought to secure should never be weakened, forgotten, or carelessly handed away, for every generation bears the duty of protecting the nation's independence and democratic values.
This commemoration is also a moment for honest reflection.
