π» Servicing a Gaming Laptop π»
ASUS ROG STRIX G18 G814JZ-N6003
Issues:
β οΈBlue Screen of Death (BSOD) Error Code: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR
β οΈRandomly having a Black Screen while gaming
Troubleshooting Checklist:
β
Created a System Restore Point
β
Download and Install the latest laptop drivers from the manufacturer's website (Display, Graphics, Chipset, Audio, Bluetooth, Network, etc.)
β
Use MemTest86 to check the status of RAM
β
Use Hard Disk Sentinel via Sergei Strelec's WinPE to check the status of the storage health and performance percentage.
β
Set BIOS Settings to Default
β
Run sfc /scannow via PowerShell
β
Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:E:\Sources\install.wim via PowerShell with the latest Windows 11 USB Bootable Flashdrive
β
Restarted several times
β
Windows Updates via Settings
β
Run the GPU benchmarks for Unigine Heaven and Unigine Valley using the highest graphics preset settings available
After running the 1st attempt of GPU Benchmark Unigine Heaven, the BSOD with error code WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR has occurred again
β
Check the Event Viewer to view the Windows error logs, as per findings, the recent ones are having errors with NVIDIA
Then, after discovering the error logs in regarding the NVIDIA, my next troubleshooting is to update the GPU/Graphics Driver to the latest, but after updating, it now has black screens with no display.
After some research, possibly the latest version of the graphics card is not stable yet, so it needs to be downgraded to the previous version.
I use the software application Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to fully wipe or remove all the files of NVIDIA's Graphics Driver.
Then I downloaded and installed from the official website of NVIDIA, the GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPU Driver version 555.99, with a release date of June 04, 2024.
Downgraded from 560.70 to 555.99
Lastly, I ran the GPU benchmarks again for almost an hour and played a few games for at least 30 minutes to test them, and finally, thankfully, the BSOD or Black Screen did not occur again.
The client requested to change a few settings, such as disabling the automatic updates from Windows Update from the settings and disabling the automatic updates of NVIDIA's Graphics Card from the GeForce Experience application.
I advise the client that if ever there are any prompts or windows that will pop out that Windows has a new update and/or NVIDIA has a new update is not to click on them; just ignore them, close them, and just observe them for at least 1 month.
