The 45th All Aboard! Startup Cebu Mixer concluded yesterday, August 19, 2026, at enspace Cebu, bringing together a vibrant community of innovators, founders, students, government representatives, and tech enthusiasts in one room.

The evening kicked off with a startup showcase featuring MyLolaWorks, a startup dedicated to creating employment opportunities for senior citizens and older adults aged 45 and above. The presentation was led by its founder, Engr. Ma. Teresa Barola, a retired university professor who spent more than 25 years teaching Chemistry and Physics to engineering students. Beyond academia, she has also built and managed businesses in beauty, internet cafés, real estate, and distribution.

Her tagline resonated with everyone in the room:

"I am retired, but not tired."

It was a powerful reminder that seniors still have so much to contribute beyond retirement and deserve meaningful opportunities to continue making an impact.

Later in the evening, Dr. Michael L. S. Abundo delivered a talk on building teams that build startups. He shared insights on creating strong, resilient teams and emphasized how embracing a growth mindset helps both individuals and organizations grow together, adapt, and become stronger over time.

During the community announcements, Neriah "Bj" Ato invited everyone to the upcoming AWS Community Cebu event on September 12, 2026. Andrew Matheu also announced the next Startup Sugodbahay, happening on August 27, 2026, as well as the latest Startup Spotlight episode in partnership with DTI Region 7.

Another inspiring night for the Cebu startup ecosystem, filled with meaningful conversations, fresh ideas, and new connections.

Startup Sugodbahay Celebrates Its 1st Anniversary! 🎉

Startup Sugodbahay marked its first anniversary on July 30, 2026, celebrating a year of founders supporting founders. This milestone gathering was hosted by Cubeworks, which also served as the venue for the anniversary meetup.

The community began with a simple catch-up among startup founders at a small restaurant in late July 2025. There were only about six founders at the table, but the bill reached around ₱6,000. While the dinner wasn't cheap, everyone agreed that the conversations were worth far more than the cost. They exchanged advice, shared lessons from their entrepreneurial journeys, discussed industry best practices, and helped one another navigate the challenges of building startups.

That evening sparked an idea: instead of meeting in restaurants, why not gather regularly at each other's offices or headquarters? Everyone could simply bring food or drinks to share, keeping the focus on meaningful conversations rather than expensive venues.

One year later, Startup Sugodbahay continues to grow while staying true to that original vision.

According to Norman Curato of Xeleqt AI, one of the founding members of Startup Sugodbahay, the community's greatest strength is its simplicity. There are no elaborate setups, no permanent venue, and no dedicated budget. Yet every meetup is filled with generous food, new faces, valuable insights, and authentic conversations. There is no rigid program or formal agenda—everyone is free to share, ask questions, and learn from one another.

During the anniversary meetup at Cubeworks, several startups took the opportunity to present what they are building, giving fellow founders a closer look at their products, ongoing development, and the problems they aim to solve. Rather than business pitches, the presentations focused on sharing progress, exchanging feedback, and helping the community better understand each startup's work.

Startup Sugodbahay will continue its monthly meetups, with the next gathering scheduled for August at another host venue.
