Facebook introduces its own standalone Groups app!

Facebook just announced another app to add to its current roster with Groups, a better way to stay connected to the ones that matter to you the most.

From class subject note sharings and organization updates to clubs that share the same passion and second hand buy and sell markets, Facebook knows that everyone loves groups. The company now makes it easier for Android and iOS users to easily get in touch with their groups, collaborate with the ones you need the most, and receive notifications right off the bat.

Aside from creating group content, there is also an option to discover more of the things you love: The discover tab brings you an array of groups you can choose to join with depending on your current interests and likes.

Facebook, however, mentioned that they will still maintain the desktop and main app group features, and they will not go away soon. You can try the new Facebook Groups app as the Menlo Park giant rolls it out on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store starting today.

Say hello to Ello, the anti-Facebook social network!

A responsive minimal design, an ad-free interface, and a concrete promise not to sell your user data to third parties. That is how we can describe Ello, a new social network that launched just recently.

After a year of initially being a private network for seven artists and engineers, Ello was launched to the public March this year with little publicity. The social network soared into popularity just last week with outrage to Facebook forcefully implementing its real name policy on all accounts. We got invites for the site from our overseas friends, and we tried it out ourselves.

The current Ello homepage, in beta. A stream of your friend’s activities can be seen, and a few button for settings and photo icons of your friends on the left column.

The social network’s biggest selling point that made users flock to the website last week: No advertisements on all its pages, and user information will not be given nor sold to any third party. The site, however, will offer an item mall-like service consisting of ‘special features’ to be able to generate revenue. These special features, once purchased, will be added onto your account at no expiration.

The author’s profile in Ello. The icon is the focal point, and a huge header picture can be seen once you scroll up.

The social network is also waging war against Facebook’s ever-changing site designs by offering a very minimalist design, mostly made up of huge white spaces and buttons in monochromatic black hues. The only thing that you can customize, for now, is your profile picture, and your header cover. The header cover takes a huge chunk of space, somewhat reminiscent of YouTube’s huge header cover requirements.

There are two streams wherein your friends can be listed on: Friends and Noise. Friends, by default, automatically expands their posts in your stream, allowing you to see them in a better view. Noise, on the other hand, compresses posts into smaller preview thumbnails, allowing you to scroll faster between them.

We experimented on all sorts of things available to the social network’s current beta setup. We were able to format our text (bold, italicize, underline, strikethrough) before we post them, posted GIF pictures onto the stream (currently set to be seen by all members of the Ello network) and put emojis reminiscent to how one does it at bulletin boards and forums.

Ello is currently in beta, with new features pending to be implemented in the near future. It will require an invite for you to be able to sign up for an account. Otherwise, one will have to wait for the huge queue of waitlisters eager to try out the new social network.

Microsoft skips Windows 9, announces Windows 10!

Microsoft is having a small event today where only few people were invited, but the happenings are far from small – the company has just announced the next version of their OS – Windows 10!

Microsoft says calling it Windows 9 would be wrong, as it will try to connect the software across several platforms, not only update the desktop. Calling it Windows One would be not appropriate as well as they’ve done it before, so they’re calling it Windows 10 for some reason, actually skipping version 9.

Naming their newest OS Windows 10 could imply reaching a milestone – a renewed focus on the cloud and creating a cohesive experience across several devices through a one app store.

“One [Ring] to rule them all… and in the darkness bind them.”

Basically, Windows 10 is Windows 8 embedded into the familiarity of Windows 7. For example, the Start menu is finally back again on the corner of your desktop, but with live tiles and new UI elements. This doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten the Start screen however, as it is still there for touch-enabled devices.

Windows will also have Enterprise as expected, and believe it or not, Windows 10 will be the next version of Windows Phone as well.

Microsoft Windows 10 will be available mid-2015 after the build conference. With that said, it’s safe to say there are still a lot of changes on the way before everything is final. For now, all that we can do is wait.

Windows 9 is coming, and here’s what to expect!

Microsoft will unveil the new Windows 9 in a press event on September 30th. We may be a few weeks away from seeing the future of Microsoft’s flagship software, but that didn’t stop those who had early access to provide some noteworthy features. We give you a rundown of what to see from the next-gen operating system.

The return of the Start menu… with a twist

Microsoft has been on the receiving end of the backlash since the release of the modern Windows 8 since it practically killed the much-loved start menu in favor of a new start screen with live ‘metro’ tiles.

Now, The Redmond Giant is getting back to basics by bringing it back… but still, with the metro tiles. A screenshot leaked from a technical preview showed the Windows Start Menu along the live tiles at the right side.

These live tiles don’t just redirect you to places and programs, but rather interact with them directly from where they are, giving new life to the rather static icons. These were previewed earlier this year on Windows Next by Microsoft Research, as seen in the video.

The interactive tiles will not initially be a part of the technology preview, and will be added on in the future updates.

Cortana for PC

Many praised Cortana on the Windows (phone) for its efficiency, and the digital assisant is arriving to the desktop platform along with the slew of the new features coming to the upgraded OS.

Evidently in its early stages, Cortana currently supports location, time and people information.

New Notifications Center

Windows 8 introduced system toasts for new app notifications. On winsows 9, Users can now check on their missed toast updates through a notification center placed at the taskbar.

Better support for virtual desktops

Virtual desktop cloning will now be a staple in the new OS as Windows puts a virtual window button besides the Search on the taskbar. The icon can be used to create and clone virtual desktops. New workspaces can easily be created, perfect for multitasking and organizing .

Relocated search icon

Windows 9 is axing the charms bar featured in its predecessor, which included the system’s search function. The instant search feature, first seen on Vista, is now located beside the start menu for quick access.

Full-screen Apps can now run in desktop

‘Metro’ apps can now be directly run in window mode from the desktop. Scrrenshots show that metro-style icons were run on the traditonal desktop, complete with a mini menu and the usual minimize, maximize and close buttons.

While Windows 9 may not be called ‘Windows 9′ at all because of the current brand restructing efforts done at Redmond, one thing’s for sure: We’re going to get a glimpse of the improvements we’ve been waiting for since the last OS update this September 30th.

Smart brings Wikipedia Zero to PH!

Smart Communications and Wikimedia foundation have recently inked a deal which will allow the two parties to give Smart, Talk ‘N Text and Sun Cellular subscribers free and unlimited access to Wikipedia through the initiative called Wikipedia Zero.

It’s almost been a year since we brought you the news about Wikipedia Zero, and if you can remember, neither Smart nor Globe were on the initial list of telcos that expressed their intent to bring Wikipedia Zero to their respective regions.

Luckily, Smart Communications had a change of hearts and formalized its partnership with Wikimedia Zero to bring Wikipedia Zero to the Philippines. Through this initiative, accessing m.wikipedia.org, zero.wikipedia.org, Wikipedia apps, as well as other Wikimedia sites on their mobile device will not incur additional data charges to all Smart, Sun Cellular and Talk ‘N Text subscribers.

As stated on our previous report, Wikipedia Zero will be a “lightweight and text-only version” of the desktop site, which will not eat too much of the telco’s bandwidth, as well as making it easier to load on the user’s mobile browser. Free access to Wikipedia started last Friday, September 5, and will end on February 13, 2015.
