Velocity Radar RG-30+

Radar Sensor for Contact-free Velocity Measurement
The flow velocity sensor RG-30+ has been designed for contact-free measurements of the surface flow velocity of rivers and channels by means of radar technology.

Features and Advantages
• Maintenance-free
• Contact-free method prevents soiling and damage
• Sensor self-check with status and error output
• 3-point velocity calibration certificate
• Advanced velocity diagnostics with spectrum display
• Sommer Messtechnik ANR: advanced noise reduction system

Fields of Application
The radar sensor RG-30+ is used by hydrolography and water management. It is applied for example in open rivers, streams or channels. It is especially suitable for measurement tasks where the usage of conventional respectively contact intense measurement systems is problematic. As for example at measuring spots which are hard to reach or carry highly turbid water. It is installed outside the water and measures without direct contact to the same. Hence, the system requires no maintenance and works reliably even during high flow, flooding or despite of debris, driftwood or high turbidity.

Implementation
The sensor impresses with low power consumption and its high reliability for permanent recording of the flow velocity. The compact design and the contact-free measurement principle by means of radar technology allow easy and uncomplicated mounting and usage.

Measuring Principle
The measurement of the flow velocity is based on the principle of the Doppler frequency shift. The sensor emits a radar signal and compares its frequency with the one of the reflected signal from the water surface. The frequency is shifted proportional to the surface flow velocity. Those signals are collected, evaluated and the medial surface flow velocity is determined.

Radar Profiler RP-30 V2

Mobile measuring system for non-contact discharge measurement
With the mobile measuring device RP-30 (Radar Profiler) a surface velocity profile from rivers and channels is created and together with the data of the river cross-section and water level the discharge is determined. - A very helpful measuring device especially for the use in flood conditions.

Features and Advantages
• Portable mobile measuring system
• Simple mounting on cable cranes, bridge railings or tripods
• Suitable for flood conditions and high flow velocities
• Non-contact radar measuring technology
• No threat from debris or driftwood
• Calculation of discharge with known water level and cross section profile
• Easy operator controls and handling
• Data transmission via Radio communication 2,4 GHz
• Easy connection setup
• Remote data transmission via Bluetooth
• Measuring range 0.08 ... 16 m/s (depending on the flow conditions)
• New user-friendly software

Fields of Application
The RP-30 is used in rivers, streams and open channels and calculates the exact discharge of the body of water through several sectional velocity measurements. As is the case with the RQ-30, this method of measurement is also based on innovative radar technology, including all the advantages of a non-contact measuring device.
The Radar Profiler is ideally suited for situationally and non-permanent monitoring tasks, for project evaluations or control measurements. In contrary to most other measuring devices it provides reliable values even in flood situations, which is an extremely interesting situation from a hydrological point of view and where most other sensors fail to be used. Therefore the RP-30 is particularly useful in flooding and natural hazard management.

Implementation
With the aid of an adjustable traveller for handrails the Radar Profiler can be easily moved along a bridge railing to the desired measuring points. Alternatively it can be fixed to a cable crane or tripod. The measurement is then carried out in sections across the whole width of the river. Thanks to the integrated Bluetooth transmitter the data are transferred directly to a laptop and can be viewed in real time during the whole measurement.

Radar Sensor RQ-30+L

Discharge measurement for open rivers with external water level data

Innovative radar sensor for non-contact discharge measurement of rivers, open channels and canals with the possibility to use and integrate external water level data.

Features and Advantages
• Contact-free rada method prevents soiling
• automatic discharge calculation based on hydraulic model with multiple dyn. k-factors
• Sensor self check with status and error output
• AI-based machine learning for compensation of environmental influences and early detection of errors

Fields of Application
The RQ-30+L is mainly applied where existing measuring sites (e.g. gauging sites) should be upgraded in terms of quality without the need for big investments. While the water level can be measured as before, the radar sensor improves the accuracy by additionally determining the surface flow velocity. Therefore the RQ-30+L is a very effective extension to all sites where the water level should (or must) be measured by a separate instrument other than the RQ-30.

The water level (water gauge) is determined by any measurement device other than the RQ-30+L and provided to the same as an analogue data input for the discharge calculation.

Discharge Radar Sensor RQ-30D

Discharge measurement for wide rivers with inhomogeneous distribution of flow velocity

With a system of one master-radar sensor and several slave-radar sensors the velocity is measured at several spots throughout the whole water cross-section. Therefore, a very high accuracy of the discharge measurement is guaranteed also for very wide water bodies.

Features and Advantages
• Discharge measurement with high accuracy – ideal use for very wide rivers with inhomogeneous velocity distribution
• One water level measurement and multiple, individual velocity measurements
• Well-proven RQ-radar technique: non-contact measurement, maintenance-free system, flood-proof
• No structural work is necessary in the water
• Recognition of flow direction and hysteresis effects
• Measurement in tidal waters
• Measurement in backwater situations
• Measures even where w**d growth prevails and sensor is not affected by turbidity
• Measuring range 0.08 ... 16 m/s (depending on the flow conditions)
• Analogue outputs from 4 to 20 mA (optional)

Fields of Application
The main advantage of the RQ-30D is that the discharge can be measured more precisely, especially in rivers and streams where the flow velocity is distributed in homogeneously over the cross-section. Varying velocities can be observed particularly in very broad streams as well as in situations, where the measuring site is located close to a river bend, an incoming river or watergates. In order to capture the complete flow-profile even more accurately, the RQ-30D system measures multiple individual flow velocities dispersed over the width of the body of water.

Measuring Principle
For the RQ-30D (in comparison to the RQ-30) the measuring principle was enhanced: Here the river is split into multiple sections and from each one a partial velocity measurement is taken. One sensor, the master device, additionally measures the water level and distributes this information to all the other devices (= slaves) in the system. Now they are able to calculate the partial dicharge rate per section. Summing up all partial amounts of discharge results in the total discharge at the actual site – continuously, with non-contact to the water and with increased accuracy. The RQ-30D system can be operated with up to seven slave devices at the maximum.
