DITO Telecommunity, the fastest-growing telco provider in the country, proved its speed superiority in 5G and overall experience as independent mobile analytics company Opensignal recognized DITO as the fastest mobile network in the Philippines, outranking Smart in the speed race.

Based on Opensignal's October 2024 Mobile Network Experience report, DITO dominated the awards and won in 14 categories, exemplifying the young telco as the country's most awarded and fastest in 5G speeds and overall experience.

In terms of speed, DITO swept all four speed awards across 5G. DITO confirmed its superiority in 5G download speed, boasting a speed of 287.2 megabits per second (Mbps), nearly double Smart's figure trailing with 147.5 Mbps and easily surpassing Globe's 95.2 Mbps. Users also saw the fastest overall download speeds on DITO's network at 34.6 Mbps with the two telco giants Smart and Globe behind at 28.6 Mbps and 20.9 Mbps, respectively.

"Our Filipino users enjoy the fastest speeds on DITO's network," said Pierce Snyder, senior market research analyst at Opensignal.

Moreover, DITO was hailed as the No. 1 mobile network for overall and 5G Video Experience, Games Experience and Voice App Experience. These awards measured how subscribers enjoyed seamless standard-definition video streaming, gaming and quality over-the-top or OTT voice services.

To cap it off, DITO received massive recognition for its availability, quality and reliability — a validation of DITO's promise to provide accessible, reliable and inclusive high-speed connectivity. DITO was recognized as the Philippines' Most Available Mobile Network, both overall and 5G, Most Consistent Network Quality and Most Reliable Network.

"DITO accumulates the most awards in this report," Snyder said.

"Having launched commercial services in March 2021, DITO now dominates the mobile network experience landscape," Snyder added.

According to Jasper Evangelista, DITO brand and marketing director, these accolades were undisputable proof that DITO has been disrupting the market with its products and services, further elevating the overall digital experience of Filipinos. Furthermore, he stressed that these awards highlighted DITO's 5G superiority as the sole telco in the Philippines with 5G Standalone (SA) infrastructure.

"From being the #1 Rated Mobile Network in the country by Ookla* to now the Fastest Mobile Network, we're honored and humbled to receive these massive recognitions, especially the fastest mobile network award from Opensignal, which all attest to our relentless commitment to excellence and innovation at DITO. These awards also show that we are leading the way in delivering the true 5G experience in the country, offering high-speed and reliable connectivity," Evangelista said.

"At DITO, our vision is to create a future-ready Philippines through our next-generation technology. These accolades validate our efforts to make 5G more accessible and a testament that, despite the challenges of being a young telco, we're on our way [toward] achieving the vision we stand for," Evangelista concluded.

These awards showed how DITO— at its infancy — continued to disrupt the competition's efforts by providing the best overall experience and true 5G standard, making high-speed internet affordable, accessible and reliable for more Filipinos to experience.

Nokia and Globe expand API capabilities to strengthen cybersecurity

Nokia has partnered with Globe Telecom, one of the largest telecommunications providers in the Philippines, to strengthen security for its banks and businesses via network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).
As a result, Globe, which already uses several Nokia solutions, including 5G RAN, is now testing Nokia’s Network Exposure Platform (NEP) to expand and simplify its API offerings.

The move aims to empower the telecom operator and its enterprise partners to develop security-focused applications.

Globe head of service planning and engineering, Joel Agustin, said: “With cyberattacks on banking services accelerating, it is crucial that we make available the latest network-powered technologies to our enterprise customers and help them safeguard against fraud.

“We are now at the stage of testing how Nokia’s NEP can support our customers in the banking and enterprise sectors with security verification tools to prevent fraudulent transactions.”

Since launching the Network as Code platform in September 2023, Nokia’s partner ecosystem has grown to 48 companies, including BT, Orange, StarHub, Telefonica and Telecom Argentina.

Nokia head of network montisation platform, cloud and network services, Shkumbin Hamiti, added: “We are very pleased to work with Globe Telecom, along with our growing developer community, in the building of new applications that strengthen security for financial service providers in the Philippines.

“Nokia NEP will help Globe Telecom organise, control, and secure the way its network is integrated into developer ecosystems and platforms, ensuring choice, flexibility and security in creating new application use cases.”

The PLDT Group has been recognized as Company of the Year for the fifth consecutive year at the 60th Anvil Awards held recently at the Manila Hotel.

The Company of the Year honor is awarded to the organization with the highest quality of entries and the greatest number of accumulated points based on the value of each Anvil trophy received.

This year, the PLDT Group—comprised of brand teams from ePLDT, PLDT Enterprise, PLDT Home, PLDT Global, Smart Sports, and TNT—secured two Gold and 12 Silver Anvils for key initiatives in brand and corporate communications, community relations, corporate citizenship, customer experience, cybersecurity, and data privacy. These programs have helped improve the lives of consumers and communities.

“The Anvil Award is a recognition not only of the quality of work but also of the impact of programs across communities and industries. It is about creating meaningful change through well-crafted, thoughtful, and strategic PR campaigns,” said Paul Michael S. De Quiros, Chairperson of the 60th Anvil Awards, during the opening ceremony.

“We are honored to be recognized once again by the PRSP for our programs that foster meaningful connections and create lasting impact in the communities we serve. This recognition reaffirms PLDT and Smart’s unwavering commitment to excellence in communication and nation-building,” said Ramon R. GLOBE fully supports the call for a Senate investigation on the illegal trade of devices used for spoofing or SMS hijacking, a fraud scheme behind the proliferation of scam texts that evade telco networks.

Senator Mark Villar recently filed a resolution seeking a Senate inquiry into the trade of International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) catchers, which allow fraudsters to send out malicious SMS in the guise of legitimate sender IDs. These portable devices serve as fake cell towers that enable SMS sending outside telco networks, thus evading spam filters.

Globe has been working with government agencies to curb spoofing by cutting off the supply of IMSI catchers in the country. These devices are imported into the country either in full or in parts for assembly, then used for illegal activities.

“Spoofing or SMS hijacking using IMSI catchers has been a major headache for both the industry and law enforcement. Spoofed messages are difficult to track because of the technology. We have high hopes that through this Senate probe, we’d be able to address the root of the problem: the illegal trade of IMSI catchers in the country,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, Globe’s general counsel.

“This is a major step in our shared goal of protecting the public from fraud. Through this legislative inquiry, we hope to find a clear path forward in the fight against IMSI catchers,” said Castelo.

Globe stands ready to provide technical expertise and support to the Senate panel as needed.

Fraudsters have used IMSI catchers to impersonate Globe’s official sender ID, duping customers with fake Globe Rewards claims and other unauthorized messages. Such spoofed messages have seen a rise as Globe enforced stricter spam and scam blocking, filtering out all person-to-person SMS with links and enforcing stringent regulations on app-to-person SMS with URLs.

Globe’s pioneering move to remove links in SMS messages shows the company will go the extra mile to make it a scam-free network and protect customers. Unfortunately the new method of scammers such as using IMSI catchers goes directly to the device and does not pass through the network anymore.

At present, Globe is looking at more advanced technologies that might help address this issue.

Globe reminds the public to stay vigilant against suspicious text messages, including those that seem to come from legitimate sources. Be cautious of links and offers that seem too good to be true.

As a security measure and to protect customers, Globe does not include clickable links in its official text advisories.

Customers who receive scam SMS are encouraged to report them through Globe’s portal.

Zobel family’s Globe steps up efforts against SMS hijacking

Ayala-led Globe Telecom is backing a Senate investigation into the illegal trade of IMSI catchers, devices used in SMS hijacking and spoofing, which have contributed to the rise in scam text messages evading telecom networks.

Senator Mark Villar recently filed a resolution calling for an inquiry into the devices, which fraudsters use to send malicious SMS messages disguised as legitimate communications.

IMSI catchers, which operate as fake cell towers, allow fraudsters to send messages outside telco networks, bypassing traditional spam filters.

Globe has been working with government agencies to curb the import and use of IMSI catchers, which are either imported in full or assembled locally for illegal activities.

Froilan Castelo, Globe’s general counsel, highlighted the challenges posed by the technology. “Spoofing or SMS hijacking using IMSI catchers has been a major headache for both the industry and law enforcement. Spoofed messages are difficult to track because of the technology,” Castelo said. “We have high hopes that through this Senate probe, we can address the root of the problem: the illegal trade of IMSI catchers in the country.”

Globe has implemented stringent measures to combat SMS fraud, including blocking scam messages and removing links in SMS. However, IMSI catchers bypass these efforts by sending messages directly to devices, evading network controls.

PLDT, Smart join partners in launching Open RAN lab in PH

Integrated telco PLDT Inc. (PLDT) and its wireless unit, Smart Communications Inc. (Smart), have partnered with USAID, the University of the Philippines (UP), and other stakeholders to launch the country’s first Open Radio Access Network (RAN) Laboratory.

Open RAN allows telecom companies to use hardware and software from different vendors instead of relying on a single provider. The setup is expected to help telcos cut costs, improve flexibility, and enhance network efficiency.

Debbie Hu, head of Wireless Network at Smart, said the facility will support PLDT and Smart’s efforts in “technical capability development, testing, research, and collaborative studies essential in paving the way for future innovations.”

The laboratory, located at UP Diliman in Quezon City, was established to drive research, training, and testing of Open RAN technology in the Philippines. Representatives from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), USAID’s Better Access and Connectivity (Beacon) Activity, and the Asia Open RAN Academy (AORA) joined PLDT and Smart officials in the unveiling.

PLDT and Smart have been involved in Open RAN trials since 2023, completing multiple proof-of-concept tests to assess the technology’s viability. The new laboratory builds on those efforts, providing a dedicated space for further exploration and collaboration.

The launch also included a visit to PLDT and Smart’s Technolab in Makati City, where partners observed existing telecom lab setups that will serve as a model for the new facility.

PLDT and Smart are strong advocates of Open RAN Laboratory’s Request for Information (RFI) to help shape the future of Telecoms technology, specifically for Radio Access Networks, in the country. The Group was also deeply involved in defining the lab’s architecture and design and ensuring that its foundation is strong, innovative, and doable. PLDT and Smart also assisted in identifying the requirements for the Lab setup, which has been pivotal in bringing the USAID Beacon and AORA vision to life.
