This tip came from a cyber-security expert.
A. Mitigating for Wannacry ransomware (this is a bit technical):
1. Ensure you have the MS17-010 Windows update applied to absolutely every Windows system
2. Check for unusual RDP traffic and scans targeting port 445 (SMB)
3. Disable SMB v1 if you can.
4. Check for the presence of these files and associated registry keys:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\[random] "[Installed_Folder]\tasksche.exe"
HKCU\Software\WanaCrypt0r\
HKCU\Software\WanaCrypt0r\wd [Installed_Folder]
HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\Wallpaper "[Installed_Folder]\Desktop\@.bmp"
5. Look for Tor traffic on the network if you can. Block them.
5. Filter .wcry and .wncry extensions across the network.
6. If you have servers or desktop PCs still running Windows XP or Server 2003, focus on hardening them and look for DoublePulsar backdoor traffic (mostly on port 445).
B. If you are not yet infected -- great! But do steps 1, 3, 5. And don't open email attachments coming from unknown sources (typically has a spoofed email header).
