Think your internet is slow? It might not always be your ISP.
Many users immediately blame their internet provider when websites become slow, apps disconnect, or video calls lag. But one of the most common hidden causes is VPN (Virtual Private Network) usage.
Disadvantages of using a VPN:
Slower internet speed
Higher latency (ping)
Buffering during streaming or video calls
Connection drops or unstable performance
Reduced download/upload speeds
A VPN reroutes your internet traffic through another server, sometimes located in a different country. This adds extra distance and processing, which can affect your connection even if your fiber internet is working properly.
If your VPN is required for work:
Connect to the VPN only when needed
Use a wired connection (LAN) whenever possible
Connect to the 5GHz Wi-Fi band
Close unnecessary apps or downloads while working
Test your speed with and without the VPN before reporting an internet issue
At GSTech, we're always happy to help troubleshoot your connection. Sometimes the issue is with the ISP—but sometimes it's the VPN, your device, Wi-Fi interference, or the work server itself.
Don't guess. Let us help you identify the real cause and get you back online faster.
