The Barutak Festival is celebrated annually on August 8 in Barangay Sto. Domingo, Bauan, Batangas in honor of Saint Dominic de Guzmรกn and in thanksgiving for the communityโs abundant marine resources, particularly the plentiful catch of the fish locally known as barutak.
Barutak is a small sardine species commonly found in the coastal waters of Bauan. According to local fishermen, the name derives from the manner in which the fish become entangled in fishing nets, requiring the nets to be shaken or struck to release them. In Bauan, the fish is also known as Don Pilas and is prepared through various traditional methods, including sinaing and fried fish marinated in vinegar and soy sauce.
Named after the fish itself, the Barutak Festival symbolizes the rich marine resources of Sto. Domingo and the fishing industry that sustains much of the communityโs livelihood.
The festival features colorful costumes, decorative displays, and cultural performances by local youth. Its principal attraction is the street dancing presentation, where participants depict the communityโs fishing traditions and maritime heritage through music, movement, and visual representations of the barutak fish.
More than a cultural celebration, the Barutak Festival serves as a public expression of faith, gratitude, and community identity. It highlights the enduring importance of fishing to the economic, cultural, and social life of Barangay Sto. Domingo while promoting the preservation of its traditions and heritage.
