VISION
Into the next ten years, we envision UC as an institution providing solutions to the needs of community and national development through the use of geographic information science. The Center for GIS (CGIS) is a multidisciplinary research, lifelong education, and outreach entity that specializes in geographic information science, technology, and related information systems. The vision of t
he center is the improvement of the quality of life, the promotion of social equity and ecological balance, and the support of sustainable development through advancing the knowledge in GISscience and applying that knowledge to address real world problems. GOALS
The center commits to:
1. Develop, implement, integrate, operate and maintain UC’s GIS projects with respect to stipulated project agreement, contracts, and task orders;
2. Strive for the institutionalization of geographic information system and its related technology and information system or the deployment of spatial decision support systems, geographic information system, and geovisualization;
3. Create a research community of GIScience in UC that will foster team work and collaboration among researchers, educators, and students who are interested in GIScience and its applications;
4. Devise an evaluation framework or a proof mechanism on the efficacy of GIScience as a societal problem solution tool;
5. Establish a viable research agenda in GIScience that will attract sustained research funding from local, regional, national, and international funding agencies;
6. Develop scholarly research in GIScience at UC and bring the program to national and international recognition;
7. Assist in the acquisition, preparation, publication and presentation of geographic data;
8. Promote thematic spatial awareness through relevant information dissemination techniques;
9. Procure accessibility for consultations on GIScience;
10. Initiate GIS projects with line agencies, local government units, higher education institutions (HEIs), and non-government organizations(NGOs), and private institution and industries to address pressing real world problems;
11. Foster national and international partnership and collaboration among researchers, educators, and practitioners in GIScience and technology;
12. Boost the employability and entrepreneurial ability of the students and to support the promotion and job security of professional trainees; and
13. Periodically update and coordinate curricular offerings to keep abreast with the ever-changing environment. FOCUSED AREAS OF RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
