Many users in the Philippines reported slow internet due to a problem with the EAC-C2C submarine cable system. Yes, despite advances in satellite technology, submarine cables remain the backbone of global connectivity.
As of last year, 22 active submarine cables operate around and within the Philippine archipelago, linking the country to the rest of the world.
These undersea cables, laid across the ocean floor, carry telecommunications signals and electrical power over vast distances. Modern submarine cables use fiber-optic technology and are only about as thick as a garden hose, yet the tiny glass fibers inside, as thin as human hair, transmit enormous amounts of data at the speed of light.
For an archipelagic nation like the Philippines, submarine cables are vital for fast and reliable communication between islands. According to TeleGeography, 18 currently active cables connect major Philippine islands and international networks, with some systems, like the PLDT Domestic Fiber Optic Network (DFON), still operating since 1997.
