There’s a real food waste issue in New Zealand and it accounts for an estimated $3.2 billion lost between the farm and consumption. Woolworths New Zealand say they are improving product freshness, reducing waste and strengthening food safety interventions through their use of GS1 2D barcodes. 2D barcodes enable a wealth of information to be encoded in them such as batch/lot number, best-before date, use-by date, weight and even web links.
