The Agritech Unleashed event in Auckland yesterday was a brilliant way to meet some of the other New Zealand businesses making waves in the industry.

Our chief executive Mike Barley made the trip up to hear the latest, catch up with old friends and share a bit of the HortPlus journey with others. Thanks to AgriTech NZ for putting on such a great event.

If you've worked in Hawke's Bay horticulture for any length of time, there's a good chance you've come across third-generation grower Roger Brownlie. We caught up with him to learn about his property, The Orchard, and get his thoughts on our MetWatch weather and disease platform.

He's used MetWatch for years and says its weather forecasts, trend data and pest and disease models give him the “edge” to succeed at growing everything from apricots and cherries to peaches and nectarines, as well as apples and wine grapes.

He describes MetWatch as an “indispensable tool” to navigate the complexities of evolving climate patterns and save time and money.

“Before we had MetWatch we calendar sprayed. So that means we sprayed every week, basically. But now we can actually look at the disease models from MetWatch and see whether it's a nil-risk period.

“In the season I use it every day. It's the weather, we use the disease models, they're fantastic … also growing-degree days and all that to see where we're at. It's really handy.”

Read how hyperlocal weather data is helping him and his team to navigate changing climate patterns so they can keep producing high-quality fruit that Kiwis love.

Great to connect with Makoto Toyoshima and Phil Gorey at the Government of Western Australia's North East Asia Tokyo Office. Fascinating conversation about WA's horticulture sector and the growing trade opportunities across APAC.

Some impressive numbers: WA's horticulture industry hit $1.92 billion in 2023-24, with fruit and vegetable exports reaching $187 million. Carrots lead exports at $61 million, while avocado exports have grown 600% since 2020.

At HortPlus, we're always keen to understand how growers in different regions are tackling decision-making challenges from weather variability to disease pressure to market timing. The fundamentals are remarkably similar whether you're in New Zealand or Western Australia.

Thanks for the warm welcome! 🇦🇺🇯🇵🇳🇿

Berries and summer go hand in hand! We caught up with one of New Zealand's largest berry businesses, The Fresh Berry Company of NZ, to learn a bit about how berries are grown and the role our MetWatch weather and disease platform plays in ensuring as many as possible can be grown and picked at the times of year Kiwis want to eat them.

Big thanks to Dean Astill and the team for letting us tell your story!

We were out and about in Hawke's Bay recently for a video shoot with some of our amazing MetWatch users.
It was incredibly energising to see their operations and humbling to hear first-hand how they are using MetWatch to increase yield, reduce pest and disease crop losses, and create more time to get out on the land doing what they love.
We can't wait to share some of these stories on our website and socials in the near future. Stay tuned! 😎
