During the summer of 89, after a camping trip that got rained out, I was driving home with my wife (Teruni) from Taupo to Wellington.
It was my first road trip in New Zealand so I wasn’t familiar with the roads. I missed the turn off at Sanson and ended up in Palmerston North.
Back then, there was no Google maps so I walked into a Shell service station and asked for directions. The attendant pointed which way I need to go and said, “follow that road and you will get back to State Highway 1 (SH1)”.
It was a wet night with poor visibility. After driving about half an hour through poorly lit rural roads, unknown to me, I was nearing the intersection at Himatangi where I need to turn south to SH1.
I remember passing an unfamiliar road sign and wondering what that was about, and all of a sudden, Teruni screamed “STOP”.
I hit the breaks, and a giant truck whizzed past right in front of us. If I had reacted one second later, then we would have got smashed in to a thousand pieces.
As a driver, I didn’t have the right information to make a safe approach to SH1. The lack of information made that intersection extremely dangerous.
Fast forward 20 years, and NZTA has done a number of improvement to make that intersection safe. The electronic signs installed near the intersection, automatically reduces the speed limits when vehicles approach SH1 from the side roads. By providing right information to the drivers at the right time the number of accidents used to happened at this intersection has reduced significantly.
