One of the biggest SEO problems I see with retailers?

Conflicting information between systems.

The POS says one thing.
The website says another.
Google Business Profile says something else again.

To humans, the differences seem tiny.

To Google, they can look like different businesses.

That alone can affect rankings.

I covered this, along with AI optimisation, schema markup and mobile SEO, in this new article.

The biggest mistake a small business owner can make is becoming the system.

How many times has the same problem hit your business this year?

A customer complaint.

A cash flow squeeze.

A missed follow-up.

A staff issue.

A project that ran late.

Most business owners react to the latest problem.

What if that problem isn't actually the problem?

I recently saw a hilarious video of a giant teddy bear sitting in a department store throwing pillows at unsuspecting shoppers. Every person turned around looking for the source of the pillow.

Nobody looked at the bear.

It reminded me of what happens in many businesses.

The symptom gets all the attention.

The cause stays hidden in plain sight.

If the same problem keeps hitting your business, stop looking for who threw the pillow.

Start looking for the bear.

A retailer contacted me wanting to “learn SEO”. Fair enough.

But once we mapped out what proper retail SEO actually includes, they quickly realised they were looking at a part-time job.

15 to 20 hours a week is not unrealistic if you are trying to do it properly yourself.

This article explains why: https://geckogullywebsites.com/retail-seo/

Most plumbing websites talk about the plumber. The best plumbing websites answer the customer's questions.

One of my latest projects has just gone live for Anne and the team at MJ Robertson Plumbing & Gas in Christchurch.

Instead of creating another website full of marketing claims, we built a site designed to answer the questions people are already asking Google and ChatGPT:

• Why is my hot water running out?
• How do I know if I have a blocked drain?
• Can a leaking tap increase my water bill?
• Does my hot water cylinder need replacing?
• What causes low water pressure?

This approach helps in two ways.

First, it gives potential customers useful information before they call.

Second, it helps search engines and AI tools understand exactly what the business does and who it helps.

That means a better chance of being found when somebody needs a plumber in Christchurch.

A big thank you to Anne and the team for trusting me with the project.

Most hair salon websites talk about themselves. But most people looking for a hairdresser are thinking about something completely different.

They're wondering things like:

• Will this style suit me?
• What's the difference between balayage and foils?
• How often will I need to come back?
• Will my hair still look good in six weeks?

That's why the new website I built for Bloom Hair Studio in focuses heavily on answering questions.

A website that helps people make informed decisions doesn't just create a better experience for visitors. It also helps Google and AI tools understand what the business does and who it helps.

The result is a website that looks great, answers real questions, and is built to attract more of the right clients over time.

AI search is changing retail SEO faster than most businesses realise.

Traditional SEO focused heavily on keywords.

AI systems like ChatGPT and Perplexity now look for:
• structured answers
• schema markup
• tables
• FAQs
• clear facts
• trusted sources

If your website is not structured properly, AI tools may simply ignore it.

I wrote this article after walking a retailer through what modern SEO now requires.
