Set up a direct debit today. Wait up to 10 days for it to work.
That's what we have come to expect, even in 2026. A customer commits, then gets told to pay by card in the meantime because the bank rails are slow. With open banking, the customer authorises once in their banking app and the payment is settled instantly.
In Australia, PayTo is replacing direct debit with real-time mandates. In the UK, Variable Recurring Payments do the same over open banking rails. New Zealand is now on that same track. NZ Open Bankings Enduring payment consent is live and ready for enterprises, utilities and government billers to adopt. The shift to modern payments is no longer a question of if. It is a question of who moves first.
