🔧 5 Free Things You Can Do Right Now to Make Your Device Last Longer
Most people don't think about their laptop or phone until something goes wrong — but a little attention now can save you a costly repair bill later. Here are five simple things you can do today, completely free.
1. Clean your vents and keyboard
Dust buildup is one of the leading causes of overheating, and overheating kills components over time. Use a can of compressed air (or even a soft brush) to clear out vents and keyboard gaps every few months.
2. Don't charge to 100% every time
Lithium batteries actually prefer to live between 20–80% charge. Keeping your device plugged in at 100% all day accelerates battery wear. Most modern devices have a "battery limit" setting — it's worth turning on.
3. Restart your device regularly
Many people leave their laptop in sleep mode for weeks. A full restart clears memory, installs pending updates, and lets the system reset properly. Aim for at least once a week.
4. Keep your storage below 90% full
When drives get too full, performance drops and write errors become more likely. Delete old downloads, empty your recycle bin, and offload photos to the cloud or an external drive.
5. Update your software
Outdated operating systems and drivers aren't just a security risk — they can cause crashes, hardware conflicts, and poor performance. Keeping things updated is one of the easiest forms of maintenance there is.

Wow

Apple Inc. was fined about $27 million in France in 2020 after authorities ruled the company did not clearly inform consumers about software updates that affected the performance of some older iPhones. The penalty came from France’s consumer watchdog under rules aimed at addressing planned obsolescence, which treats deliberately shortening a product’s lifespan as a punishable practice.

France has since expanded its focus on product longevity. Advocacy from the nonprofit HOP helped drive reforms such as a mandatory repairability index that scores devices like smartphones and laptops on how easy they are to fix. The country also introduced a repair fund to help subsidize fixes, while the European Union has been exploring similar right-to-repair policies across its member states.
