🧩 Some laptop repairs feel a bit like a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle!

Here’s a full bench teardown of a Microsoft Surface Laptop brought into our Petone workshop today for a battery replacement.

Unlike standard laptops where you just pop off a back cover, Surface laptops are built like little steel vaults.

To reach the battery cells buried at the very bottom, virtually everything else had to come out first—display linkages, cooling system, heat pipes, and the motherboard!

(Safe to say, thank goodness for the morning coffee before tackling this many micro-screws... ☕😅 Espresso Rescue)

All reassembled now with fresh thermal paste, fully tested, and running good as new.

"FAKE VIRUS ALERT" SCAM WARNING

Over the past few weeks at our shop on Nelson Street, we’ve seen a large surge in locals bringing in computers hit by fake "Critical System Security" pop-ups.

What these fake alerts look like:

🛑 Fake McAfee / Norton Notices: Full-screen warnings claiming your subscription has expired and "Trojan Spyware" or "5 Viruses" were found.

🛑 Windows Defender / Microsoft Alerts: Alarm noises, frozen screens, or messages claiming your IP address is exposed and your computer is locked.

🛑 Google Chrome Warnings: Prompts asking you to "Click ALLOW to prove you are not a robot," which then spams your screen with fake virus pop-ups every minute.

THE TRUTH: None of these are real virus alerts. They are deceptive browser traps designed to scare you into calling an 0800 scam number, giving away credit card details, or granting strangers remote access to your computer.

💡 WHAT TO DO IF THIS HAPPENS TO YOU:
DO NOT call any phone number shown on the screen.

DO NOT click any button on the pop-up (even the "X" can sometimes trigger a download).

Force-close your browser: On Windows, press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC, select your web browser (Chrome/Edge), and click End Task.
