Think on brand means matching colours and fonts?

It doesn’t. It’s waaaay better than that. 💫

To me, on brand means people experience your business as the thing you say it is. It’s an overall feel that isn’t always obvious, but you do notice it when it’s missing.

That only happens if the strategy is right before the design begins. Then whatever comes out the other end, you’d know it anywhere.

Currently in the proofing stage of two books at once, and my to-do list has kind of turned into this ridiculous length of a thing that only actually makes sense to me. None of it’s glamorous and most of it will probably never get noticed by anyone actually reading the book. But I really love this nitpicky part where I’m pretty much the only one who’ll ever know a caption used to be inconsistent. 🤓

You’re apologising for: your sketch on the back of an envelope.

I’m thinking: finally, the actual idea.

Hand your accountant a pile of receipts and they’re not judging you, they’re thinking that’s literally the job. Same with the plumber and a blocked drain. The apology says more about us than it does about them.

Bring me your brain dump scribbles and the forty tabs of Pinterest with no actual plan. Honestly, that’s the best place to start.

My job isn’t to make things look like my taste.

If it were, everything I made would be whatever my brain’s hyperfixating on this week. (Currently it’s red, thanks for asking.) 😉🍓

I ask a lot of questions instead, and push back when I need to, because the good answer is rarely the first one.

It’s been months since I’ve posted anything here, which either means I’ve been very busy or very avoidant… definitely a bit of both.

Anyway, I’m back, and I’m currently up to my eyeballs in typography for two chunky coffee-table books at once, which is actually a dream come true for this graduated-in-the-early-00s-and-will-forever-be-loyal-to-print designer.

And I keep getting reminded of the same thing, over and over: most of what makes a book easy to read, you’re not actually meant to notice at all. This is kind of a rule across all good design, but in this instance I see it in a quote pulled out and given its own little moment. Or a quiet, perfectly aligned caption that doesn’t steal the photo’s thunder. None of it is super noticeable, but take it away and suddenly the whole thing feels somehow off. That’s some sneaky text hierarchy doing its sneaky work. 😉

When my family was young I left employment and started working for myself. Best decision I ever made, though not always the easiest.

Working in my own time gave creativity somewhere to breathe, and my brain honestly hasn’t switched off since. Ideas on walks, in the supermarket, at the washing line. That’s just how it works for me, and I’ve come to love that about it.

I’ve been in design for over two decades now, and have been running Ponder for more than ten years. I never set out to build a big studio, just to do good work for people who cared about it as much as I did.

The clients I love come to me at all kinds of stages. What they have in common is that they care about the outcome. That’s where the good work starts.

I genuinely believe there’s a great designer out there for every business. Finding the right match matters more to me than winning the work.

Thanks for reading this far. Glad you’re here. 🤎

Some kind words from clients I’ve had the pleasure of working with.

Good design should do more than look right. It should feel right to the people behind the business, and land right with the people it’s made for. These are a few businesses who trusted me with that, and were kind enough to say so.

If something here resonates, I’d love to hear about your project. Link in bio.

People often ask what working with a designer actually looks like.

For me, this is the honest answer. A conversation, a lot of questions, and a process built around getting it genuinely right.

If your brand isn’t quite reflecting the quality of what you do, that’s where I might be able to help.
