Microsoft is retiring SMS and voice authentication at the end of January 2027. If you still sign in with a code sent by text or phone call, now is a good time to plan the switch.

Our recommendation is passkeys. They’re a simpler way to sign in, with nothing to remember and nothing to type.

We put together a short video explaining how they work and why we think they’re worth switching on wherever you can.

If you have questions about setting up passkeys for your team, we’re happy to talk it through.

100km along Taupō’s Great Lake Trail, shared between four of our team.

Nige, Julie, Andrew and Dan P took on the Taupō Ultramarathon this weekend as a relay team, each running their leg and handing over to the next.

A huge effort from all four of them, making the ITP team proud.

A reminder worth sharing as the end of the year gets closer.

At the end of December, Microsoft is switching off Basic authentication for SMTP AUTH by default. It's the way an email app or device proves who is logging in. It's being replaced because it is an outdated way of logging in that’s now considered a security risk.

For many offices, that means copiers and scanners that scan to email using a username and password could stop sending without warning.

Now is a good time to check which devices and apps send email through Microsoft 365, and create a plan to transition to the new sign-in method (OAuth) when the time comes.

If you’re not sure where your business stands, get in touch and we’re happy to talk it through.

Last week we had a wonderful morning with Dress For Success Hamilton NZ 💗

It was a privilege to be in a room full of women from across the region, all there to support a cause that helps women into work with confidence, through professional clothing, mentoring and ongoing support.

The speakers were knowledgeable and inspiring, and the energy in the room was something special.

Congratulations to the whole team behind the event, and thank you for having us.

That's a wrap on Cyber Smart Week 2026. Thanks to NCSC and Own Your Online for a practical, well-run series of webinars.

A quick recap of our tips from the week:
1. Keep cyber on the board agenda, with clear owners for each risk.
2. Check before you act on any unexpected request for money, codes or details.
3. Know where your valuable data lives and who can access it.
4. Get the basics right: MFA, passphrases and a password manager.

The common thread is that cyber security isn't something to hand off to IT and forget. It's a business risk, and most of the protection comes from simple habits applied consistently, from the boardroom to the front desk.

If this week has raised questions about where your business stands, get in touch. We’d love to chat.

Today's Cyber Smart Week session is a good reminder that while AI is making attacks faster and more convincing, the basics of staying safe haven't changed.

Here’s three things that make the biggest difference, at home and at work:
1. Turn on multi-factor authentication everywhere it's offered. An authenticator app is stronger than text message codes.
2. Use long passphrases and a password manager, so no password is ever reused.
3. Check what's out there about you. NCSC's How Exposed Am I? tool shows what information about you may be exposed online: https://ap1.hubs.ly/H01qwDs0

None of these cost much or take long to set up, which is exactly why they’re worth doing this week, rather than someday.

Your team's personal habits follow them into work, so getting these right at home protects your business too.

The webinar runs 1pm to 2pm with Bastion Security and a NZ Police cybercrime investigator.

Two Cyber Smart Week sessions today.

At 11am, NCSC and Outfox cover how criminals target business data and what to do if an incident hits.

At 1pm, NCSC's Chief Technology Officer and Australia's ACSC look at how AI is being used in cyber defence, aimed at IT and security teams.

Two tips from Holly, Senior Systems and Security Assurance Engineer:
#1: Know where your most valuable data lives and who can get to it. Businesses hold more data than they realise, and too many people can reach it. Old shared folders, ex-staff accounts that still work, and sensitive emails are openings for attackers. Delete or archive what you don't need and limit access. The less there is to find, the less there is to lose.
Most businesses have more data than they realise, and more people have access to it than need it. Think old shared folders nobody has cleaned out, accounts for staff who left months ago that still work, and sensitive files sitting in email. Every one of those is something an attacker can use. Delete what you no longer need and limit access to the people who actually use it. The less there is to find, the less there is to lose.

#2: AI can help spot attacks faster, but it can't fix weak foundations. Keeping software updated, using multi-factor authentication (MFA), and limiting who has access to what are still some of the most effective ways to stay protected. These basics close off the easy entry points attackers rely on most, so AI becomes another layer of defence instead of a replacement for the basics. Sign up to today’s webinars below.

Today's Cyber Smart Week webinar is built for older New Zealanders, but the lesson applies to everyone in your business.

AI has made scam emails, texts, calls and fake websites far more convincing. The spelling mistakes and clumsy wording that used to give them away are disappearing.

A tip from Dan, Senior Security Consultant: always follow a simple rule, check before you act.

Make sure an unexpected request to make a payment, change bank details, share a code or click to verify an account gets confirmed through a channel you already trust. Call the person on a number you have on file, never one in the message.

At work, this one habit stops most invoice and payment fraud. A two-minute phone call is far cheaper than a lost payment. At home, a family code word works well for calls claiming to be a loved one in trouble.
Share today's session with parents, grandparents and anyone in your team who'd benefit. It runs 1pm to 2pm today with Age Concern and SeniorNet.

Cyber Smart Week starts today with a session aimed squarely at directors and senior leaders.

The point NCSC is making is one we hear more and more from insurers and regulators. After a cyber incident, the hard questions don't go to the IT team, they go to the board.

A tip from Tim, our Chief Information Security Officer: make cyber a standing item on the board agenda, not an annual update. Each time, ask three questions:
1. What are our biggest cyber risks right now, and who owns each one?
2. If we were hit tomorrow, how quickly could we recover, and when did we last test that?
3. Would our cyber insurance pay out based on the controls we have in place today?

If you can't answer those with confidence, that's your starting point.

Today's webinar runs 1pm to 2pm with NCSC's Catriona Robinson, Kendra Ross from Sidekick and Declan Ingram from Trust Hound. Sign up here: https://ap1.hubs.ly/H01q3zl0
