YouTube is becoming more important for AI search visibility.

International research is increasingly showing YouTube as a major source for Google’s AI Overviews, with some US studies finding it cited in close to 30% of results.

We don’t yet have equivalent New Zealand-specific data, so we can’t assume the percentage is the same here. But the broader trend is worth paying attention to.

Video is no longer just about reaching people on YouTube or social media. Google can understand much of the content within a video, including the spoken content through transcripts, alongside titles and descriptions.

For many NZ businesses, the first step is actually pretty simple: have a YouTube channel and start getting useful videos onto it.

They don’t all need to be highly produced. Start with videos that explain what you do, demonstrate your expertise, showcase your products or services, and answer the questions customers commonly have.

Then make sure those videos are properly titled, described and optimised so Google — and increasingly AI search — can understand what they’re about.

YouTube is becoming another part of SEO and AIO, not just another social media channel.

For the past few years, we've been encouraged to give AI more context — detailed instructions, background information, preferences, frameworks and examples.

But as AI models become more capable, we think the better question is becoming:

What context does AI actually need for this task?

One development we find particularly useful is Skills.

A Skill is essentially a reusable set of specialist instructions that AI can call on for a particular type of task, rather than having those instructions permanently loaded into every conversation.

We now think about AI context in three layers:

1. Persistent context
Who we are, how we work, our preferences and recurring business information. For example, we have NZ English spelling as a preference and instructions to challenge our assumptions rather than simply agreeing with us.

2. Task context
The specific client, objective, audience, constraints and source material for the job at hand.

3. Specialist instructions
Detailed methodology or processes that are only brought in when that particular task requires them.

For example, we don't need detailed SEO methodology sitting in the background while we're working on brand positioning. But when we're reviewing a website for SEO and AIO, that's exactly when we want it.

More context isn't necessarily better. The right context at the right time is.

Have you changed the way you prompt AI as the models have improved?

Print still has an important place in the marketing mix – particularly when you need something tangible that represents your brand well.

We design a wide range of materials for print, from property brochures and capability documents to flyers, signage and promotional material. And we can manage the whole process, including liaising with printers, checking specifications and artwork, and arranging production.

It means our clients don’t have to navigate print terminology, file requirements or supplier coordination – we take care of it from design through to the finished product.

Here’s a recent property brochure we designed for TGC Homes, showcasing their premium townhouses on Shetland Street, Dunedin.

AI can sound very confident when it’s completely wrong.

Another simple AI tip from the Cre8ive team: make AI show you where it got its information.

AI “hallucinations” happen when tools such as ChatGPT or Claude generate information that sounds plausible, but isn't actually true.

The problem? The answer often doesn't look wrong.

It can be beautifully written, confidently stated and include very specific figures.

So when we're using AI for research where accuracy matters, we give it much tighter instructions.

Instead of:

❌ “What are the latest statistics on X?”

Try:

✅ “Answer using only information from [SPECIFIC WEBSITES/SOURCES]. Cite the exact source and link for every statistic or figure. If the information isn't available from those sources, say ‘not found’. Don't fill the gaps from memory.”

For example, if we wanted New Zealand population statistics, we could tell AI to use Stats NZ rather than simply asking it to find the answer.

Why?

🔎 You control the quality of the sources.
You're not leaving AI to decide which websites should be trusted.

🔗 You can check the answer yourself.
If AI tells you “37% of New Zealand businesses…”, you should be able to click through to the original source and confirm it actually says 37%.

And this is important:

⚠️ A citation isn't proof that the answer is correct.

AI can misinterpret a source, attribute information incorrectly or even provide a citation that doesn't support the claim.

For anything important, open the source and check it.

A good rule for using AI for research:

👉 Don't just ask for the answer. Ask for the evidence behind the answer.

AI can dramatically speed up research. It shouldn't replace verification.

A little different from our usual morning in the office 🩺

Here’s Philippa at Tūhura Otago Museum, talking doctors through what to expect before sitting their practice exam for one of our lovely clients, the Dunedin Basic Medical Sciences Course Trust.

The doctors have come to Dunedin from across New Zealand and Australia for an intensive three-week course covering anatomy, physiology and pathology as they prepare for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ Surgical Sciences Examination – an important step on the pathway towards becoming a surgeon.

The Dunedin Course has a long history of helping doctors prepare for these demanding exams, combining intensive teaching with practice exams that let participants experience the format and process before sitting the real thing.

Cre8ive has worked with the Dunedin Course for more than a decade. Over that time, we've designed and built their website, created participant and exam information, developed their online exam platform in Moodle, and produced other marketing material.

Twice a year, we also help deliver the practice exam – testing the system before it goes live, briefing participants on the day, collating the results and sending them out afterwards.

It’s one of those projects that shows just how varied our work can be – and one of the things we enjoy most about working across such a diverse mix of clients, industries and projects.

Most businesses go straight to a designer or developer.

That’s fine—if you already know exactly what you need.

But most don’t.

They haven’t defined the goal.
They haven’t clarified the audience.
They don’t know what the website or campaign is meant to do.

So they end up with something that looks good—
and performs badly.

Strategy isn’t a “nice to have” at the start.
It’s what stops you wasting time and budget on the wrong thing.

Our role is to define the direction first—
then bring in the right people to execute it properly.

We've been diving much deeper into AI lately, looking at how we can use it more effectively and efficiently in our day-to-day work at Cre8ive.

There is a LOT to learn (and it’s changing incredibly quickly), so as I come across simple tips that genuinely make a difference, we will share them.

Here’s an easy one to start with.

💡 One word that can improve your AI prompts: “because”.

When you give AI an instruction, don’t just tell it what you want. Explain why.

For example:

⛔ Weak:
“Don’t use emojis.”

✅ Better:
“Don’t use emojis because this is going into a formal proposal for a corporate client and needs a polished, professional tone.”

Why is the second one better?

The first gives AI one rule: no emojis.

The second gives it context. It now understands you’re trying to produce a formal, professional document, so it can use that information to make better decisions about the rest of the output too.

A few more examples:

✏️ For readability:
“Write short sentences because most of my readers will open this on their phone and skim it.”

📧 For formatting:
“Don’t use tables because I’m pasting this into an email platform where tables don’t display reliably.”

🔎 For accuracy:
“Tell me clearly when you’re uncertain because I may use this information with clients, and I would rather know something needs checking than be given a confident but incorrect answer.”

And on that last one — always fact-check anything important. Telling AI not to make things up doesn’t guarantee it won’t!

One more tip: make your “becauses” permanent.

If you find yourself giving AI the same rules repeatedly, add them to your Custom Instructions or Project Instructions instead.

For example, rather than:
“Use NZ spelling.”

Try:
“Use New Zealand English spelling and conventions by default because our clients and audiences are predominantly New Zealand-based. Avoid US spelling and terminology, as it can make content feel generic or poorly localised.”

Then you don’t need to repeat it every time.

The simple formula:
👉 What you want + why you want it.

A small change to the way you prompt AI that can lead to noticeably better results.
