Mountain boars can be quite transient, covering long distances, looking for food, a safe gully to rest in, or a sow to breed with.
Different to our other big game species, there is no set rut time, boars rut anytime of year, as sows cycle every 21 days.
As pigs can't sweat to regulate their temperature, they tend to travel in the cooler parts of the day, early morning late evening. Thats why on cold rainy days it is a good time to catch a pig out in the open.
I find a big influence on pigs behavior is hunting pressure, so the further back in the hills I go, I see the behavior is different from that in the front country, and catching a boar out moving is more common 🐗

Hunting stags up high in the winter has its challenges, the snow, the cold, the short days, but for me, thats what makes it even more memorable. Type two fun.
On this hunt I had to wait in the freezing, for over an hour, it was bitterly cold and I didn't want to get my warm gear out of my pack incase it spooked the stag who sat 60 yards away. The contour of the hill wouldn't allow me a shot if he spooked away from me. the cold wind and snow soaking through my clothes had me shaking like a leaf when, finally he stood up for a stretch. A well placed shot had a nice stag to take home 👍🏽

One of the Free features of the app is the blog, every Sunday it is updated with hunting stories, articles, news and events check it out.
