Last month I had the honor of speaking at E Tipu: The Boma Agri Summit and sharing some of the story of UC Vision NZ and FruitMinder, an example of industry and research coming together to explore how to bring frontier technology into the hands of the people that need it.

We face some wicked problems in the Ag sector right now with climate risk, being a high wage economy competing in commodity markets and getting the next generation exited about the sector as a career pat. Solving them will take risk, holistic approaches to complexity, and leadership.

Big thanks to the UC-Vision team - Check out their work!

Fruitminders 2023 Central Otago open day wrapped up!
πŸ’πŸ‡πŸŽ

An amazing day showcasing innovation in the horticulture sector. Over 70 growers from the lower South Island joined us to look into the future of what’s possible πŸ‘€

The excitement around change is real. Growers are finally seeing technology that makes senseπŸ“±πŸ’»πŸ€–

The idea for the day was to show how all these pieces of the tech puzzle fit together.

From operations and crop/ tree monitoring, to harvest and international sales and distribution - we were able to show the whole pipeline.

Massive thanks to everyone who helped make it happen!

With all the hype about I thought I’d ask what it thinks the horticulture industry will look like in 50 years? And pair it with an Ai generated image from of what a fully automated orchard may look like, here’s the results!

ChatGPT: It is difficult to predict exactly what the horticulture industry will look like in 50 years, as it will likely be influenced by a variety of factors such as technological advancements, changes in consumer preferences, and shifts in global economic and political conditions. However, it is likely that the industry will continue to evolve and innovate in order to meet the increasing demand for sustainable and efficient food production. This could include the use of precision agriculture techniques, such as precision irrigation and precision fertilization, as well as the incorporation of new technologies, like vertical farming and genetic engineering. Additionally, the industry may also see an increased focus on urban agriculture and the use of hydroponic and aeroponic systems for food production in cities.
