Stop chasing web design clients

“Where do I find clients?”

Wrong question.

Ask this instead:

“How do clients find me?”

Years ago I spent hours sending cold messages.

Low replies.
Lower rates.
Zero control.

Everything changed when I focused on visibility.

Clients hire from places they already trust.

If your work is not there, you stay invisible.

Start here:

- Post your projects on portfolio sites like Behance and Dribbble
- Submit strong designs to award platforms like Awwwards or CSS Awards
- Share your work on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn
- Show progress, not only finished projects
- Post daily or weekly without gaps

Designers who win do one thing well.

They show up.

Not once.
Not when work feels perfect.
Every week.

When your work appears in the spaces clients search, you stop begging for projects.

You position yourself where hiring decisions happen.

One client sees your post.
Visits your profile.
Checks three projects.
Sends a message.

No pitch needed.

Visibility builds trust before you speak.

Look at your last 30 days.

How many times did you publish your work?
How many platforms show your portfolio?
Would a client find you in five minutes?

Shift from chasing to positioning.

Clients are searching.

Are they finding you?

Stop Designing From The Top Down

Most websites fail before the first pixel is placed.

You start with the header.

Then the footer.

Then the sections.

You ask:

How wide?
How many blocks?
What color?
What buttons?

You drain your energy before solving the real problem.

Top designers think different.

They ask one question:

What is the main action?

For most sites it is simple:

• A clear headline
• An input field
• A button

Start there.

Design as little as possible.

Good design is less design.

Remove extra colors.
Remove extra words.
Remove extra elements.

Your brain looks for patterns.
Users scan in seconds.

If your layout is not clear at a glance, you lose them.

Use these rules:

📏 Add more spacing than feels right
Your users scan the whole screen, not one element.

🧱 Group related items together
Use size, color, and spacing to show connection.

🎯 Emphasize one key element
Increase size.
Increase weight.
Reduce contrast on secondary items.

🎨 Limit your colors
One dark.
One light.
Two accent colors.
Make text easy to read.

🔤 Increase line height for small text
Small text needs more breathing room.

Most people overdesign.

They add shadows, gradients, icons, sections.

More design often leads to ugly design.

If everything shouts, nothing stands out.

Want better ideas?

Study top websites.

Save sections you like.

Look for patterns.

Then step away.

Take a walk.
Work on something else.

New ideas show up when your mind rests.

When you finish a design, do not protect it.

Show friends.
Test with users.
Adjust.

You might build three weak pages before one strong section appears.

Finish something anyway.

Creativity is a process.

Not a moment.

Next time you open Figma or your editor, ask yourself:

What is the one action this page must drive?

Start there.

Stop selling web design to everyone.

Most freelancers struggle for one reason.

No focus.

You do not need more tactics.

You need a clear path.

Here are 5 steps I used to land consistent web design clients:

🎯 Pick one niche
Choose a specific market. Fitness coaches. Local restaurants. SaaS startups.

When you focus on one group:
- You build credibility fast
- You understand trends
- Your marketing gets easier
- You charge higher rates

Look at past projects.
Which ones did you enjoy most?
Is there demand in that market?

🖥️ Build a tight portfolio
Do not dump random work.

Show:
- Before and after redesigns
- Your design process
- Client testimonials

Host it on WordPress or another simple builder.
Keep it clean. Clear. Direct.

📊 Set real sales goals
“I want more clients” is not a goal.

Try:
- 5 new clients this month
- 3 pitches each week

Decide where you will sell.
Freelance platforms for side income.
Your own website for agency growth.

🗣️ Improve how you speak about your work
Most designers talk in jargon.

Clients care about results.
More leads.
Better conversions.
Stronger brand presence.

Research each prospect before you pitch.
Send updates during projects.
Ask for feedback.

🤝 Find new clients every week
Do not wait for referrals.

- Attend niche events
- Partner with other freelancers
- Build a social media presence
- Collect emails through your site
- Send useful newsletters

Consistency beats talent here.

Ask yourself:

Do people know who you serve?
Do they see proof?
Do you pitch weekly?

Web design sales is not luck.

It is focus.
Process.
Daily action.

Stop Designing For The F Pattern

Most designers still believe users read websites in an F shape.

Top left to right.

Down a bit.

Across again.

Sounds smart.

Feels logical.

It is wrong.

People scan in many patterns.

They jump.

They skim.

They hunt for what matters to them.

When you force an F layout, you hide key information.

So what should you focus on instead?

Visual hierarchy.

Make the most important message the biggest thing on the screen.

Then guide the eye down in clear steps.

Here is what works:

👀 Big, bold headline
Your H1 should state who you are and what you offer. No riddles. No fluff.

🧭 Clear subheadings
Use H2s to break sections. Help readers scan and decide fast.

📄 Simple paragraph text
Skip decorative fonts. Fancy kills readability.

🎯 High-contrast buttons
Your main goal is clicks. If your button blends in, you lose sales. Use solid buttons. Stop using ghost buttons with thin outlines. People miss them.

I once redesigned a site for a client.

Clean layout.

Modern look.

Great colors.

We launched.

Sales dropped.

Why?

I focused on beauty over conversion.

Pretty design does not pay the bills.

Clarity does.

Good conversion reduces friction.

Ask yourself:

• Is it obvious who this site serves?
• Is it clear what action comes next?
• Does each section push toward one goal?

If not, fix it.

Let’s talk color.

Use the 60 30 10 rule:

🎨 60 percent dominant base colors
Think white, gray, black.

🎨 30 percent brand colors
Support your identity.

🎨 10 percent accent color
Use for buttons and key highlights.

Also check contrast.

Low contrast text hurts users with visual limits.

Use a contrast checker like coolors.co.

Input your palette.

See what passes.

Accessibility is not optional.

Now typography.

Three levels matter:

🔠 H1
Largest text. One core message.

🔡 H2
Section guides.

📝 Body text
Clean. Easy to read. No script fonts.

Design for your audience.

Not for yourself.

Not for your client’s taste.

Research who visits the site.

What do they want?

What problem are they trying to solve?

Then build around that.

Web design changes fast.

What worked five years ago fails today.

Lazy designers fall behind.

Those who keep learning stay relevant.

AI will replace designers who stop improving.

It will not replace designers who think, test, and refine.

So look at your website right now.

Does your main message dominate the page?

Do your buttons stand out?

Is the next step obvious?

If not, you know what to fix.
