Tailoring a communications solution for the Crusaders.

When the Crusaders needed to upgrade their communications equipment, our team spent time getting to know how they work. From training sessions, game days and traveling up and down the country, they required a setup that worked as hard as they do.

By working closely with coaches and support staff, we built a system for the way the Crusaders operate. That meant tailoring radio accessories to individual preferences and designing a custom 12-radio Pelican case that could carry and charge all equipment they needed, while meeting airline weight requirements.

The result is a communications solution that fits seamlessly into the way the Crusaders' work, helping keep the team connected wherever the season takes them.

The Tait Foundation fuels innovation at every stage of learning, helping to fulfill Sir Angus Tait’s vision of encouraging a vibrant community of technology companies.

As a part of that mission, they recently funded a collaborative robot (Cobot) at the Ara Institute of Canterbury, giving engineering students access to tools typically only found in manufacturing environments.

For mechanical engineering graduate Leon Chen, the Cobot became the centerpiece of his final-year project and a highlight of his studies.

"Working with the Cobot was one of the coolest projects I've ever done," says Leon. "As a student, you don't usually get access to technology like this. It's expensive and typically only seen at industry expos."

The Cobot was purchased by Ara after seeing one in action at the Tait manufacturing facility here in Christchurch. Designed to work alongside humans, the Cobot can be programmed and reprogrammed quickly, making it ideal for manufacturing processes where flexibility matters.

The Tait Foundation has also donated electronic test equipment to Ara's Electronics Department, giving students high-quality resources and hands-on learning.

For students like Leon, it offers something even more valuable: the chance to connect theory with real-world application.

Our very own Lead Design Engineer, Dr. Alan Murray, was able to support the purchase of the Cobot through his work with the Tait Foundation and other post-secondary institutions as a trusted advisor and mentor.

"Having students exposed to real-world problems with this technology is hugely beneficial" says Alan.

Leon has since joined Tait as a Surface-mount Technician, and future Ara students will be able to work with the Cobot on their own projects.

This is what our partnership with the Tait Foundation is all about: supporting STEM education and career development to build the future of our industry.

: Mining edition

Open-cut coal mining runs 24/7, 365 days a year, and so do the radios.

Tait portables are used by dispatchers, Open Cut Examiners (OCEs), heavy machinery operators, and wash plant teams across an expansive open-cut site that runs around the clock.

Our UX Design Engineer Bonnie recently spent a day on a mine site to see how our radios are used in the mining industry. They walked through the pit, observed operations in the wash plant, and talked with the operators and dispatchers who rely on them for every shift. The radios are always on, frequently shared across shifts, and relied on for safety-critical communication in high-noise environments where clarity can't fail. ⛏️

Behind every training session, substitution, medical response, and coaching decision is a network of people who need to stay connected when the pressure is on.

That's why Canterbury-based rugby team, the Crusaders, have been using Tait radios throughout the season to keep coaches, medical staff, and operations teams connected on the sidelines. The same mission-critical tech trusted by emergency services worldwide, now helping New Zealand's most successful provincial rugby team communicate when it matters most. 🏉

We recently welcomed Crusaders player and All Black Scott Barrett to our Christchurch campus to see first-hand how the technology his team relies on is made. Scott also met with some of our biggest rugby fans from across Tait during a meet and greet.

We've been filming something pretty special with the Crusaders and we can't wait to share more. Stay tuned.
