Transformer failure on an Audio Research Ref 6 preamp. One winding of the toroidal was open 😳. Fairly unusual.

I had some friends pop into the workshop to jam on my home tube amp builds. My versions of Fender's Vibrolux ( The Korimako ), Princton Reverb ( The Tui ) and a little single ended 6V6 screamer, The Piwakawaka. 😀😉

Two different amps but with the same problem, a blown output stage. Denon and Anthem get rebuilds. Typical in this type of amp is the hrs spent and the screws turned just to get them to a state they can be worked on 😵‍💫

Here is a lovely Quad 405 with a failed output stage, plus it gets new mains filter electro's to boot and some nice speaker binding posts. 😉

I have been repairing Yamaha integrated amps for over 30 years, which is helpful as some faults would be a hair pulling experience without knowing where to look. This amp was entering dc protect mode, and like most is prone to leaking/ failing electrocaps in the diff amp stages. This cap was not a dead short but 680ohms so slowly leaked dc across it and after a couple of hrs would trip the protection circuits.
