Unfortunately we need to let people know of a well known and popular domain and web hosting company that is showing signs of very unethical practices and hard sell tactics.

The example here is when your domain name or web hosting is up for rewewal, their check out system by default will choose 3 years and add on other services such as domain name protection that were not requested.

There is no method or way on check out to change this and the only option is to proceed with the transaction or back out and loose services which impacts email delivery , websites and more. Very dodgy indeed!

Freeparking was purchased by Crazydomains some time ago and while I don't enjoy bagging other companies I would advise people considering using crazydomains.co.nz services should proceed with caution.

We are also hearing customers who are having the 'hard sell' for services they really don't need.

Not cool crazydomains.co.nz

Yikes another late model MacBook Pro A2447 With water damage. Customer did turn it on (not usually a great idea) but the device no longer charges as most of the liquid damage is on the USB-C charging port side of the main board. Stay tuned for updates.

By now most of us should know that Microsoft are dropping support and updates for Windows 10 which means over time the operating system will become less secure as security updates will no longer be provided.

We have been hearing from a number of customers who have had a "geek" a "nerd" or computer shop assistant suggest that laptops and desktop computers that are only 5 to 6 years old that do not offically support Windows 11 will need replacing despite this not really being the case.

For this reason we offer a free assessment to check the basic health of your device if dropped in to our store and can upgrade your device to Windows 11 removing the restrictions typically the same day. We do however recommend faster SSD storage which you may already have inside your device however we will assess and recommend suitable upgrades if required.

Contact us to chat and we can happily discuss what can be done saving you thousands on new hardware!

Todays (well yesterdays) bench repair is a Lenovo V14 laptop in perfect condition no signs of misuse or liquid damage.

Symptoms are very simple
No power on , no charge Led power supply providing 20v Dc socket in good condition.

After removing the main board, the next step is to measure voltage at the input socket and the MOSFET pair Often found at the input stage of a laptop.

20V at the DC socket which then dropped to zero after this indicating a dead short somewhere on the main power rail.

injected one volt at 3 amps into this line and inspected with a thermal camera revealed the common culprit which was a dead filter capacitor and dodgy looking mosfet

replaced both and power was restored!

Here is why putting your laptop in rice following a liquid spill is a BAD idea. In this event the Customer has placed this MacBook Air into a bed of rice which overtime combined with the water has turned into a gooey mush making it much more difficult to repair.

I have made a more in-depth post on our website explaining why in more detail

A gooey mess thanks to Rice + Water!

Happy New Year! Back to work today but during my break managed to help with a quirky new PC build for a customer who had built the machine. All
Was well but no post or image on screen and no USB activity on an external keyboard. Typically this indicates an issue with RAM , CPU , power supply or worst case failure of the mainboard , CPU etc.
Suspected BIOS update was required which on this model is easily done even without a CPU or RAM installed with the Q Flash functionality. This did not solve the issue , removing the CPU and heatsink revealed a small amount of thermal paste had reached the small delicate pins that make contact with the CPU , cleaning and reflashing the BIOS with the latest version solved the issue.

Another “ be careful when you get your computer repaired “ post.

Today we had a lady drop in a machine that had been previously repaired by another company having the battery replaced. This particular model is extremely common to damage the trackpad as it’s quite exposed so when removing the glued in Battery small components can be knocked off the circuit board for the trackpad which also controls the keyboard thereby rendering both the trackpad and keyboard totally dead. We had to replace the trackpad and 20 minutes later a fully functional MacBook Pro is ready to collect.

Adding insult to computer injury , the other Repair company refused to accept that they’ve done anything wrong and even charged her for an unnecessary cable which did not solve the problem.
