Project Throwback | St George’s Hospital

When the new buildings at St George’s Hospital were constructed following the Christchurch earthquakes, modern steel, concrete and glass created an unexpected challenge - mobile signals struggled to get through.

For a hospital, reliable connectivity isn’t simply a convenience. Staff need to communicate effectively, while patients and visitors want to stay connected with family and loved ones.

Following a detailed site audit, Teltrac designed and installed a purpose-built in-building mobile coverage solution supporting all three major New Zealand carriers within the same system - a first for a major New Zealand site at the time.

The improvement was immediate, delivering reliable mobile coverage throughout the target areas of the new buildings.

A great project to look back on, and a reminder that sometimes the infrastructure you can’t see makes a very real difference to the people using a building every day.

Edd Shepherd and Jack Burden, from our Nelson branch, worked with our supplier Go Wireless NZ to donate an IOT weather station to The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary. Together with Gowireless, our team explained the benefits of the weather station to the sanctuary.

An IoT weather station gives real-time, microclimate data via cellular or satellite links. It cuts down on travel to remote areas, tracks sudden weather shifts, and improves pest control, fire safety, and habitat care.

Real-time temperature and humidity tracking help staff protect sensitive native flora or captive/recovering fauna.Soil moisture and rainfall data guide native tree planting and watering schedules.

Live local data helps trigger early fire bans or staff alerts.

Instant warnings for heavy rain prevent sudden flooding damage to tracks, culverts, and fences.

Attached is a photo Edd took of Jack handing over the IOT weather station to Murray Neill, Field Operations Coordinator, responsible for fence security and more. Teltrac and Go WIFI were excited to provide this weather station to the sanctuary .
