Canterbury Marine Communications Incorporated Canterbury Marine Communications - Creating Safer Waters around the Canterbury Coast with advanced VHF Marine Radio Coverage monitored 24/7 by volunteers

Canterbury Marine Communications is a not for profit group run fully by volunteers and relies on community funding and sponsorship. The group provides 24/7 monitoring of VHF marine radio in the Canterbury Region from Cape Campbell down to Timaru. This is done through a number of advanced radio communications systems that uses VOIP and ROIP technology. We aim to provide weather forecast information

, safety alerts, navigational warning, trip reports, assistance or distress calls when not answered by another agency such as Maritime NZ or Coastguard as well as keeping relatives up to date with the trip progress of their loved ones. These services are free to both recreational and commercial vessels. We encourage people to leave trip reports every time they go out on the water this can be done through Maritime Radio or if you prefer you can call us on the channel in the area your in and give us the details or you can just give us a quick phone call. This is to aid the Search and Rescue agencies in the event you are reported missing. Failing to close a trip report does not start a search but we will go to every length to contact the boat owner or family members or in some cases police is necessary to make sure they got to the destination safely.

Hello to all members and supporters.
Summer is over and has been one of the busiest times for us on record. We are finalizing our statistics which will be posted up early April.
Mid April is the change over for our season so we will be cranking into training mode and our winter maintenance / improvements. For those interested in getting involved winter is the time we take on new members send your interest to [email protected]
From the 10th June to the 10th July we will cease all training due to the short days and colder weather. This is a time for our members to get a well deserved break.
Great news! We will soon have a new interactive website and phone app. This is to provide more options for the public to log trip reports electronically which are monitored by our communications center. This app and website is currently in testing and is hoped to be launched early August. This app will support Android, Windows and Apple iOS phones and will be free of charge both to download and to use.
This is an exciting step forward for the group with the aim of getting more people logging there trips both at sea and on land with the ultimate aim of having more information should an incident occur during a trip.
Keep Well,
Sincerely.
David

Busy season kicks off again this weekend. We are all ready to go and from Saturday we will be running 3 radio operators during the day on weekends and 2 during the week days and 1 operator overnight 7 days a week.
We are all ready to go and our operators have been doing some serious training over the winter months.
This summer we will be launching our trip reporting app for IPhone and Android. This will enable more people to create and update a trip report through their phone at anytime. Failure to close a trip report will still have the same procedure where we ring / call on the VHF marine radio and then if no luck we contact relatives and failing that we then visit the location logged as being launched from.
We are making changes to our weather reporting and safety reporting from 1st December 2015 will keep you all posted.
Keep safe and have fun out there!

Some may know already but from September channel 60 Kaikoura - 63 Christchurch and channel 04 Akaroa will be owned by Coastguard Southern Region.
You will all know that for quite awhile now we have been building up a new radio network which includes new repeaters in all of these areas giving greater maritime coverage.
As part of this the new repeaters in Kaikoura, North Canterbury, Christchurch, and Akaroa are all linked together and are monitored by our team.
All are welcome to use our repeaters within reason for keeping in contact with other boaties as well as family back on shore when doing trips. No membership fees required as our funding supports our operations very well.
For a map of the radio coverage as well as the channels available please contact us with your address and we will send out a pack with a information book as well as stickers that you can attach to your boat.

Some very rough weather on the way for Canterbury from tomorrow for most of the rest of the week.
As we have a number of land assets through out the area we will have all our assets on standby to assist where needed. This means generators, communications systems and our 4wd utes which all have sets of chains.
The purpose of our group is to serve our communities anyway we can that's how we are able to get our funding to run such a group as we aren't here just to provide marine communications however that is our primary purpose we are here to assist where we can with the equipment we have available.
All our calls from the public for assistance come directly to our communications center which is manned 24/7 however if you have a serious emergency please call 111

Update: March 2015
This year we are working on bringing VHF radio coverage monitored 24/7 to All Southern Lakes within the Canterbury Region. This will be a great asset to those that do pleasure boating or commercial work within the Southern Lakes areas. We have been granted the funds to achieve this task and will give a launch update once work is nearing completion.
This is another step forward to providing safer waters through marine communications.
