Day one of the new Progressive Projects website, and the first job was getting the crew in front of a camera. Point a lens at a builder and half of them turn into statues, so we gave the team an hour to relax and that's when the real shots showed up. Smiling, mid job, having a laugh. Those are the photos that carry a builder's website, because people want to see the crew who'll actually turn up. If your team's work is better than your website, that's the bit I fix. https://www.skdigital.co.nz

Cool day at work. I was on site with Leisurecom Homes watching a brand new transportable home leave the factory for Matarangi. I usually only see these homes through a laptop screen, so seeing RCL tilt a whole house out of the factory and onto a three million dollar trailer was something else. Years of expertise go into getting a home to its forever spot without a scratch. Pretty bloody cool. https://www.skdigital.co.nz

A silly online game called Runescape taught me how to be good at business, and I'm not joking. I played it as a kid, then rediscovered it in my twenties while I was in the rowing team. We used to race back from training to get online, and the older athletes gave us grief for wasting our time. But the game is built around grinding and rewarding you for finding efficiencies, it's got a massive in game economy where you learn supply and demand with your own gold on the line, and you can't do the big stuff alone. I copy and paste all of that into how I run my business now. Who's laughing now. https://www.skdigital.co.nz

Unpopular opinion: if you're a designer, a marketer, an accountant, or anything where the job happens on a laptop, AI can already do a good chunk of it. People say it's all about the human touch, and taste does matter, but taste can be trained too. The only real barrier now is getting a model trained on your context, and that shrinks every month. It's not doom. The human is still needed, just higher up the chain doing the judgement and the relationships. The sooner you accept that, the better placed you are. https://www.skdigital.co.nz

I get thanked a lot for communicating well, and it always stops me. You're paying me to do a service. Keeping you in the loop about that service is the bare minimum, surely. If that's the bit that stands out, how badly is everyone else doing it? Tell people what's happening, tell them when, and do what you said you'd do by the day you said it. That's the whole trick, and apparently it's enough to put you miles ahead. https://www.skdigital.co.nz

One small change absolutely tanked my client's lead flow. We added an address field to his enquiry form so the business would know where the work was. Sensible on paper. I did warn it would add friction, but we both got a shock: a new enquiry every day turned into one enquiry in ten days. We reverted it and the enquiries came straight back. Nothing else changed. That's how fragile lead flow is for a service business, and it's why someone needs to be watching closely enough to catch it fast. https://www.skdigital.co.nz

I'm a Kiwi entrepreneur building a business and wanting to connect with other people doing the same. So the content's about to get a bit more raw: less cut up, less fancy. My screen is fogging up while I record this and it looks rough, and I don't think that matters. What matters is whether it's actually useful, and the filter I'm using is whether a younger, less experienced version of me would have found it helpful. If that's what you want more of, come along. https://www.skdigital.co.nz

My name's Shaun, I'm an entrepreneur from New Zealand, and behind me is my fiancee Kaela and our one year old son Ronan. We both run small businesses from home: I build websites and run marketing for Kiwi businesses, and Kaela hand paints pet portraits. Two businesses, one roof, one very small supervisor. We're documenting the journey as we go, so if you want to follow a couple of Kiwis having a real crack at building the dream, come along. Dedicate a bit of time every week to experimenting with AI and the uses in your own business become obvious. Most people wait until they can see a use case before touching the tools, but it works the other way round: you play with something, then a couple of weeks later you look at a job you've done a hundred times and think, that's where this goes. Nobody outside your business can tell you where AI fits in it, because you're the one who knows the work. Stuck for a start? Open a conversation with Claude or ChatGPT and get it to interview you about what you actually do all day. https://www.skdigital.co.nz

The economy is not the problem. I have run that excuse before and it nearly cost me everything. Before my rowing crew won Olympic gold we had a big downturn in performance, and the cause was the story we were telling ourselves: we were hard done by, it was harder for us. It felt harmless at the time. It was a mind virus and it took years to get out of the team and out of me. Demand really is down 20 to 30 percent in some industries right now, so the conditions are real, but they are not a reason for poor performance. While your competitors are complaining, that is your window to get ahead. Do the mahi, get the treats. https://www.skdigital.co.nz
