# Kinross: Central Otago Wineries and wine tasting
There's a moment, walking into Kinross's tasting room, when you realise you're standing somewhere special. Maybe it's the wall of gold letters spelling out the name against a backdrop of vines and the Pisa Range. Maybe it's the warm timber and stone, or the floor-to-ceiling windows framing the mountains beyond. Either way, Kinross has a habit of making a first impression โ and it only gets better from there.
For visitors, that's the real drawcard. Instead of hopping between wineries to get a feel for the region, Kinross lets you taste the breadth of what Central Otago does best in one sitting โ a genuine cross-section of the area's terroir, styles and personalities, all poured by people who know every one of these wines intimately.
# # Tastings Led by People Who Actually Know Their Wine
Any cellar door can hand you a glass. What sets Kinross apart is the team behind the bar. Ask a question about a particular vintage, a specific block, or how a wine will age, and you'll get a real answer โ not a script. The staff clearly love what they do, and that knowledge turns a simple tasting into something closer to a masterclass, delivered with warmth rather than pretension.
Whether you're a seasoned Pinot Noir devotee or trying Central Otago wine for the very first time, the team meets you where you are. First-timers get a friendly, unintimidating introduction to what makes this region's wine so distinctive; more experienced palates get the deeper conversation โ soil types, clones, barrel regimes โ that makes a tasting genuinely memorable.
# # A Room Built for Lingering
The space itself deserves its own mention. Vaulted timber ceilings, moody black steel, warm pendant lighting and a stone-clad bar give the tasting room a feel that's rustic but considered โ more high-country lodge than typical cellar door. Sink into the leather couches by the window, or pull up a stool at the curved bar and watch the light change over the vines.
Move through to the adjoining room and you're met with a wall of wine racks and full-height windows looking straight out over the vineyard rows to the mountains beyond. It's the kind of view that makes you want to order another flight and stay a little longer โ which, frankly, is exactly the point.
The Wine Not team recently visited the iconic and gorgeous Kinross winery in Central Otago, and we absolutely loved every moment of being there. Will certainly re-visit on our next Queenstown trip.
