Seagate hard drive clicking and not showing up? Behind the scenes in our data recovery lab with a 4TB drive full of family photos.

This is a real case we worked on. A Seagate 4TB drive, model ST4000DM000, was sent to us from Melbourne. It had started clicking and would not show up on the computer, and it held years of irreplaceable family photos and personal files.

How our data recovery engineer approached it:
1. Recognised the sound straight away. That clicking is one of the most common Seagate failures and pointed to failed read heads.
2. Opened the drive in a dust free laminar flow cabinet and checked the platters first. No scoring or damage, so the data underneath was intact.
3. Fitted healthy donor heads from our own stock of more than 20,000 donor parts, then patched the ROM on the PC-3000 so the drive accepted its new parts.
4. During the clone, two of the eight heads ran slow and unstable. He read the six strong heads first to secure most of the data, then worked the two weak heads slowly to fill in the rest.

The clone was completed, and the files were extracted, verified and saved to a new drive.

A tip from the case: if a hard drive is clicking, turn it off and leave it off. Every power cycle keeps failed heads moving over the platters.

New Zealand customers, including Auckland, are welcome to send their drive in.
If you have a hard drive like this, or know someone who does, email [email protected] or call 0800 000 189.

SanDisk USB stick not detected by any computer? Behind the scenes in our data recovery lab, where one tiny board was hiding two separate faults.

This is a real case we worked on. A SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe 256GB, the kind with USB-C on one end and USB-A on the other, was sent to us from Adelaide. One day it stopped being recognised by any computer, and it held the only copy of the owner's most sentimental photos and videos.

How our data recovery engineers approached it:
1. The PC-3000 detected nothing at all, which pointed to an electrical fault rather than a problem with the data.
2. The data recovery engineer who does our board-level micro soldering found a power section in short circuit. One of two power regulator chips had shorted out, so he transplanted a matching chip from a donor SanDisk drive.
3. Still no detection. He kept diagnosing and found a tiny resistor whose value kept fluctuating, while the same part on the donor was rock steady. He replaced it, checked the voltages, and the drive was finally detected.

The most important files were copied first, then a full copy was made on the PC-3000. The photos and videos were checked, and saved to a new drive.

A tip from the case: if a USB stick stops being detected, stop plugging it in. Repeated attempts put power through a board that may already have a short.

New Zealand customers, including Auckland, are welcome to send their USB stick in.
If you have a USB stick like this, or know someone who does, email [email protected] or call 0800 000 189.

WD My Passport stopped working and won't spin up? Behind the scenes in our data recovery lab with a portable drive making a very faint click.

This is a real case we worked on. A home customer from Sydney's inner west had a WD My Passport, the small 2.5-inch portable kind, that one day simply stopped working. It held years of personal photos, videos and memories of loved ones.

How our data recovery engineer approached it:
1. Listened first. A very faint, low-pitched clicking, not the loud click of death, meant the drive was struggling to spin up. The read/write heads were stuck to the platters.
2. Opened the drive in a dust-free laminar flow cabinet, carefully released the stuck heads and sealed it back up.
3. This is an SMR model with locked firmware, so he connected it to the PC-3000 Express through a USB to SATA adapter, unlocked the firmware and imaged the data safely.

700GB came back, over 62,000 files, transferred to a new USB hard drive, with a full file list and a video screen recording of the data emailed to the customer.

A tip from the case: if a portable drive won't spin up, leave it unplugged. Don't tap or knock it, don't open it and don't run recovery software, because every power on makes the motor strain against the stuck heads.

New Zealand customers, including Auckland, are welcome to send their drive in.

Hard drive shows up but files won't copy? Behind the scenes in our data recovery lab with a WD 10TB drive full of bad sectors.

This is a real case we worked on. A Western Digital 10TB drive (WD101EZAZ) from a car mechanic's workshop in Western Australia showed up on the computer, but nothing would copy off it. It had already been tried somewhere else without success, then posted across the country to our Sydney lab.

How our data recovery engineer approached it:
1. Tested it on the PC-3000. It powered on and sounded healthy, but the SMART status was bad, with a large number of bad sectors.
2. Ran a sector by sector clone on the DeepSpar Disk Imager, unattended for six days, skipping the bad areas.
3. Stopped at 94 percent when the heads started to fail. The platters had media defects, so a head swap would not have helped.

About 4TB, around 4,700 files, came back with every folder and file name intact. The few damaged files in the unreadable 6 percent were marked in the file list.

A tip from the case: if a drive is detected but files won't copy, leave it unplugged. Every copy attempt or software scan works the heads over the damaged areas again.

New Zealand customers, including Auckland, are welcome to send their drive in.

MacBook Pro won't turn on after a spill? Behind the scenes in our data recovery lab with a 2023 MacBook Pro 16-inch M2 Pro.

This is a real case we worked on. A freelance designer in Sydney opened her MacBook Pro one morning to a black screen and no sign of life, with a client deadline days away. On this model the storage is soldered to the logic board, so the only way to the data is to get the original board working again.

How our data recovery engineer approached it:
1. Connected it to a lab power supply. It was not drawing the 20 volts it should.
2. Found corrosion from an earlier liquid spill around the USB-C power circuit, cleaned it, then traced a short on a main 12 volt power route.
3. Used a thermal camera to find one blown capacitor smaller than a grain of rice, among hundreds of other parts, and replaced it under a microscope.

The board came back to life, and 300GB of her work, over 600,000 files, was saved to a new USB hard drive.

A tip from the case: if a MacBook has had a spill, even months ago, and won't turn on, leave it switched off rather than trying different chargers.

New Zealand customers, including Auckland, are welcome to send their MacBook in.
