A terrific night at (South) HQ celebrating the future of editorial and book design.

A big thank you to DINZ Students DINZ Student Council and James Groggin Practise for bringing together such an engaged group of students and emerging designers for our Open Studio and Moments In Time book talk a month or so back.

It was a privilege to share the thinking and craft behind our publication, and James exceptional display; from editorial curation and storytelling to materials, print, binding and production.

Most importantly, it was about keeping the knowledge and craft of books moving forward. In an increasingly digital world, there’s real value in connecting the next generation of designers with physical print, specialist processes and the people who make it happen.

Thanks to everyone who came along, asked questions and shared the evening with us.

Honey Springs was created as more than a café; it was imagined as a place overflowing with warmth, generosity and sweetness.

Inspired by the energy and community of a thriving hive, we developed a brand centred on the idea of creating a place always buzzing with life. A distinctive hive brandmark, flowing custom wordmark, honeyed palette and expressive visual language translate the qualities of honey across every touchpoint, from signage and interiors to packaging and communications.

The result is a cohesive brand experience that has helped Honey Springs build a loyal community and become a beloved local destination.

BUILT FOR WHAT’S NEXT.

For more than 40 years, Watts & Hughes has helped build New Zealand, growing from a family-founded business into one of the country’s leading construction companies, with more than 300 people nationwide.

As a new generation steps forward, South was engaged to create an identity that could honour that legacy while confidently carrying the business into its next chapter.

At its heart is a new monogram, constructed from structural forms and engineered connections. A distinctive W reveals a hidden H, bringing the company’s initials together in a single symbol of partnership, continuity and enduring craftsmanship.

The geometry extends across a complete visual system, while the original Watts & Hughes forest green has been restored and reimagined for today.

A significant new chapter for a significant New Zealand business. Built on strong foundations. Built for what’s next.

A NEW IDENTITY FOR The Design Conference The Design Careers

The Design Conference brings together some of the world’s most progressive creative voices for three days of ideas, conversation and connection at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

Ahead of its 2026 edition, TDC collaborated with South to create a distinct new identity capable of capturing the energy, curiosity and evolving nature of the international conference experience.

At its heart is a layered logo that speaks to ideas of self-reflection, awakening and transformation – the shift that happens when we encounter new ideas, voices and perspectives.

From this central symbol, a rich and expressive visual language unfolds, with shifting forms and motion states bringing the identity to life across key moments and touchpoints throughout the conference.

A distinctive new face for TDC – dynamic, thought-provoking and constantly evolving.

OODLES OF NOODLES 🍜 🐉

Oodles brings generations of Northwest Chinese cooking into a bold new world – celebrating heritage without getting stuck in the past.

Inspired by hand-pulled Lanzhou noodles, traditional Chinese animal motifs and the ancient Dunhuang murals, we created an eccentric menagerie of noodle-flowing mythical creatures. Sweeping manes and swooping wings become tangled masses of noodles, balancing cultural reference with a playful contemporary attitude.

Traditional reds, golds and teals drawn from historic artworks were dialled up into a distinctive modern palette, while playful messaging brings even more energy to the experience.

Big Slurp Energy. Bowl. Eat. Repeat.

For Flynny’s - product and packaging were developed as one connected experience, considered from the razor in hand through to the moment it arrives at your door.

Working closely with the founders and manufacturing partners, we refined an existing razor platform, adjusting proportions, head and blade details, and integrating custom branding into the handle.

Around it, we designed a completely custom structural packaging system. The form wraps precisely around the razor, combining recyclable stocks, tactile debossing and a tear-away sleeve that creates a considered moment of reveal. Supplementary blade packs extend the same design language, creating a cohesive system built for the subscription experience.

Premium, purposeful and made to feel good in the hand.

SHAVE WITH PURPOSE!

Introducing Flynny’s – New Zealand’s first Kiwi-owned, high-performance subscription razor brand, built around adventure, legacy and giving back.

Named after Flynn, the identity carries his spirit forward through Floyd, his loyal dog. Hidden within Floyd’s silhouette is a razor, a simple moment connecting product, story and purpose.

From Start Fresh. Go Far. to Look Sharp. Live Wild., the brand takes shaving out of the bathroom and into the outdoors, creating a world built around freedom, confidence and adventure.

Through Flynn’s Fund, 10% of profits support outdoor and sporting initiatives across Aotearoa, NZ.
