At what size does a business actually need managed IT?
One employee? Three? Ten? Twenty?
There's no magic number.

A one-person accounting firm dealing with sensitive financial records could have greater IT security requirements than a five-person business mostly using phones and a couple of cloud apps.

The better questions are:
- How dependent is the business on its technology?
- How sensitive is the information it holds?
- How complicated are its systems?
- And what happens if something goes wrong?

For some businesses, managed IT can make sense from the very first employee.
For others with simple, low-risk IT, good support and the right security foundations may be enough.

In our latest video, Aliza and Solana explain the signs that your business may have reached the point where somebody needs to take responsibility for managing its IT.

If someone asks AI to recommend a business like yours, what will it find?

AI-powered search can bring information from different sources together into an answer.

So it's worth checking what your website actually tells people.

Does it clearly explain:
What you do?
Where you work?
Who you help?
And the questions customers ask before buying?

There's no magic AI markup or guaranteed way to be recommended.

Start by making your business information clear, useful and accurate.

Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard or Premium?

If you're looking at Microsoft 365 for your business, it's easy to assume these are simply three versions of the same thing: good, better and best.

That's not really how they work.

In our latest video, we explain the practical differences between the three plans:

- Business Basic: email, cloud services and browser-based Office
- Business Standard: adds the full desktop Office applications
- Business Premium: adds much stronger security and device management

We also cover whether you can mix licences across your team, and why simply buying Microsoft 365 Business Premium doesn't automatically make your business secure.

If you're reviewing your Microsoft 365 licensing - or just wondering whether you're paying for the right thing - this is a good place to start.

AI is getting a lot more capable - but before you hand it the keys to your business, check what it can actually access.

September brought OpenAI agents that can keep working between chats, new Microsoft Copilot tools for building apps and ongoing tasks, Gemini connections to business software, Windows 11 26H2, and another reminder that NZ businesses remain a major target for cyber threats.

Our advice this week? Start with one useful AI workflow, keep permissions tight, and don’t forget the security basics.

This is the Business Tech Rundown with Mint - your quick update on the technology changes that actually matter to NZ businesses.

Small businesses can now build software that used to cost thousands - just by telling an AI what they want. 🤖
It’s called vibe coding.

Tools like Replit, Bolt and Lovable can turn plain-English instructions into working applications, while tools like Claude Code and Codex can go even further.

For small businesses, the interesting part isn’t building the next Facebook.

It’s building those little calculators, dashboards, workflow tools and automations you’ve always wanted but could never justify paying someone to develop.

The catch?

Just because AI-built software works doesn’t mean it’s secure.
In the first Business Tech Rundown with Mint, we explain where vibe coding could help your business - and where you need to be careful.
