Sometimes, all I need is the air that I breathe....

Want to add more air and openness to a vocal without making it harsh or overly sibilant?

Try this as a starting point:

✨ HIGH: 12 kHz
✨ SHELVING mode
✨ BOOST: +1 dB
✨ HIGH CUT: OFF

If 12 kHz brings out too much brightness or sibilance, try the same +1 dB boost at 16 kHz instead. This can add more top-end air while affecting the presence range less. Leave Tube Boost switched off at first, so you can clearly hear what the EQ itself is doing.

And sometimes, all you need is an Gainlab Audio Empress 2 x 3 band Tube Equalizer to get you there....

Noise Gates 101

The noise gate first appeared in 1970, designed by Allison Research and was designed to tackle the problems of noise building up in a signal chain. Engineers be engineers, discovered they could get quite creative with it...

In the early 80's Ivor Drawmer, developed the idea and expanded on it considerably adding Two channels and frequency selective filters which allowed engineers to determine just what sounds triggered the gate. He also added Attack and Release parameters, and the Hold control increased control over their signal’s contour.
A ducking control reduced the level of the signal rather than open the gate when the detector was active, and a ‘Key Input’ (AKA external sidechain input) rouded out the feature set.

This became known as the Drawmer DS 201 and shaped the sound of the 80's drums and guitars on classic records we know and love ....I'm sure you Feel it in the Air Tonight ;-)

The Drawmer DS 201 is still in production over 40 years later, and is in a single channel with all the same feature for 500 series....the aptly named DS 101.
