Turntable Guy’s June Vinyl of the Month is …. English rock band, Shriekback’s, “The Infinite” compilation album from 1984. Shriekback’s music is a mixture of funk, post-punk, new wave, and art-rock. My favourite track from this album is 'My Spine (is the Bass Line)’, originally released on their 1983 album “Care”, because it is infectiously funky and hypnotic.

What have you all been listening to this year?
Have you listened to Shriekback’s music before?
What do you think?

Everyday I am reminded to be grateful to be able to spend my time doing what I love and cherish. Slowing down and appreciating the small things is so important in today’s busy and chaotic world. Enjoy watching (& rewatching) my favourite yellow vinyl spin!

In honour of May the Fourth, Turntable Guy’s May Vinyl of the Month…. STAR WARS original soundtrack from 1977.

My wife is an absolute mega star wars fan, and the original soundtrack vinyl always reminds me of her glee every time we watch (rewatch) the original Star Wars movies.

As most of you would know, the 'Main Theme’, written by John Williams, from the original Star Wars soundtrack vinyl, is playing in the video.

May the force be with you!

We've talked about the stylus brush for stylus cleaning and a dense soft brush for dusting your turntable, but what about the record cleaning brush? Record cleaning brushes are usually made from fine carbon fibre bristles that clean off dust and reduce static on your vinyl records as demonstrated in this video.

You can purchase a record brush at multiple NZ-owned business such as: Real Groovy Southbound Records Sound Division Flying Nun Records

Happy Easter Everybody! I hope you have all had a lovely Easter weekend!

Today I present Turntable Guy’s April Vinyl of the Month…. “Ella Mental” by Ella Mental released in 1989! The song playing in the video is Ella Mental’s cover of Bob Marley and the Wailer’s “No Women No Cry” from the album Natty Dread.

Perhaps a bit more of a niche choice but it does remind me of my past in South Africa. Ella Mental is a South African rock band formed in 1981 with a fraught story filled with violence, heartbreak, and fighting against a brutal system of power. The album, titled after their name, was not released in South Africa. The band produced the ‘Ella Mental’ album in the US releasing it with Warner Brothers. Overall, the album is more americanised than their previous South African works, likely an attempt to fit into the US market, but still holds true to their roots. This may be a harder record to get your hands on but digital recordings are available on YouTube —-> here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe7P0WzOesS9cVb75szUvjFQmA2mlerzP

I recommend reading more about their story here -> https://sarockmusic.com/rock-legends/rock-legends-artists/ella-mental/

I also recommend listening to this live performance as well! —->
