Next major Windows 10 "Creator's" update is coming for free in spring 2017 :
The update brings about a major focus on 3D content creation and simplified multimedia and game sharing.

Microsoft had quite a few interesting new devices to show off on stage today, including the new Surface Book i7 and the Surface Studio. Between all this and the attention-challenging length of the presentation, it was arguably quite easy to slightly neglect the big software news, namely the next major Windows 10 update.

Unlike the aforementioned devices, it will be available absolutely free to the masses of Windows 10 users. And like the name suggests, a central part of the new OS iteration will be content creation and sharing, with a primary focus on 3D and VR in particular.

You might remember Paint 3D's appearance in the news from earlier this month and indeed it will be part of the Creator's update. It is frankly just the tip of the iceberg of what Microsoft is trying to achieve, but it does sum up the US giant's new approach to content creation quite nicely. Microsoft wants to make working with 3D a lot more approachable and user-friendly.

Manipulating objects in a 3D environment looks like child play within the software. It also allows you to capture real-world objects with nothing more than a mobile phone and combine them with your own creations or those pulled from an online Community pane library. The end results can quickly be shared to Facebook for viewing, also printed in 3D and explored in 360-degree view using Microsoft's Hololens AR headset.

Speaking of the latter, Microsoft also announced its intentions to make its augmented reality technology a lot more accessible in the future, thanks to upcoming headsets from the likes of HP, Dell and Lenovo. And if that is still outside your interest, Microsoft has also baked 3D features into a large portion of its office suit, including Word and PowerPoint.

Besides 3D and VR, Windows 10 also aims to become a more welcoming environment for gamers. Considering the ongoing platform unification between PC and the Xbox, such developments are all but expected. In Microsoft's own words: "Windows 10 Creators Update is designed for e-sports and game broadcasting". Streaming is now baked into the OS. Just pressing the Windows key + G starts a stream, no Twitch, OBS or Xsplit needed. Of course, the feature is tightly woven with the Xbox live platform, making it mostly proprietary in nature. It is still not quite perfect and can take its performance toll on certain games. But since Microsoft's intentions with things like Cross Play and the upcoming custom tournament support seem to be aimed mostly at competitive gaming, it is sure to be improved in the future.

The Creator's update will be made available to all Windows 10 users for free in spring 2017. But if you participate in Microsoft's Insider program, you can start experimenting with builds as early as next week.

Microsoft introduces digital badges for Microsoft Certified Professionals

Microsoft has partnered with Acclaim to introduce Microsoft badges for Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs) to achieve certain certifications or pass select exams.

Acclaim is an independent badging platform owned by the company’s test-delivery partner, Pearson VUE, and provides a way to manage, share, and verify one’s Microsoft Certifications. Acclaim uses the Open Badges standards defined by Mozilla to offer digital badges. The web-enabled representation of an individual’s Microsoft certifications is made of an image and metadata uniquely linked to the person, and can be shared online, embedded in a résumé, or included on an email signature.

The digital badges will allow professionals to easily share the details of their skills in a trusted and verifiable manner to explore opportunities for career advancement. With Microsoft badges, professionals can find out which employers are looking for individuals with their skills, discover what kind of salary to expect to earn with those skills, as well as search for new job opportunities associated with their certification.

For now, MCPs who pass select exams or achieve the certifications, on or after October 21, 2016, will receive badges. However, beginning in November 2016, badges will be retroactively issued to those who passed the exams or achieved the certifications prior to October 21, 2016. After this pilot badge program, Microsoft will share details of additional badges in January 2017.

Steve Ballmer says Microsoft tried to buy Facebook for $24 billion

During an interview with CNBC, ex-CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, stated that Microsoft made an attempt to buy Facebook for $24 billion. The reason it didn’t go ahead? Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, declined the offer.

Steve Ballmer said:

Oh I think $24 billion when the company was itsy-bitsy and he said no. And I respect that.

Microsoft did, however, end up with a $240 million stake in Facebook when it was three-and-a-half years old when it was valued at $15 billion.

Microsoft warns of fake Security Essentials installer malware scam !

Security is a huge (and growing) issue in the ever-more connected world in which we live. Malware has plagued computers for years, despite many tools being available that work to prevent it.

Microsoft has released a post on its TechNet blog which warns of one particular piece of malware that imitates Microsoft Security Essentials. Known as Hicurdismos, it acts as a Security Essentials installer, when in truth, it is just malware. Once installed, it will throw a fake Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error message. This message intends to replicate the BSOD that we all know too well. But, as Microsoft states, there are a few ways to tell if someone has downloaded the official Security Essentials or a fake:

The name of the downloaded file is setup.exe – Microsoft does not use this for official Security Essentials installers
The BSOD screen includes contact information – real BSOD messages do not contain contact information
File properties will be different; for example, the ‘Company’ will not be listed as Microsoft Corporation and the file size will be less than 1MB
The company also notes that users on Windows 8 or Windows 10 do not need Security Essentials, as the same functionality is baked into Windows Defender.

For this particular piece of malware, the BSOD displayed shows technical support information and asks affected users to call it. Calling this number is a scam. Upon calling, they’ll ask for payment details to fix the problem – a problem that doesn’t actually exist – then users will still have this malware on their PC.

If a PC is infected with this malware, Windows Defender Offline can be used to remove it. This will be able to remove the malware without needing to be connected to the internet or have full PC access, as the operating system does not need to be started to make use of it.

Finally, Microsoft recommends reporting the incident to them. Microsoft continually collects data on reported scam incidents involving Windows and investigates accordingly, while also liaising with relevant authorities. You can report it to the company using their Report a Scam form.
