On 19th September 2026, Nepal launched its Online National MRV Portal, strengthening how the country measures, reports, and verifies greenhouse gas emissions, NDC progress, adaptation efforts, and climate finance.

Read all about it: https://www.wwfnepal.org/knowledge_hub_/newsroom/?398175

The portal, developed through the CBIT project with financial support from GEF and WWF Nepal as the implementing partner, will help turn climate data into evidence-based action.

๐ŸŒŠ Mappers Needed | Nepal Flood 2026 ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

In response to the 26 August Nepal Floods, professionals from NAXA , MapBuds, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) and Open Mapping Hub - Asia-Pacific Team have launched mapping efforts to generate timely information for response and recovery efforts. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

Many people are still missing, while rescue and response operations are ongoing. Volunteers and responders working in the field need reliable and up-to-date spatial data to better understand the affected areas and support their efforts.

To help, we are mapping and validating roads and buildings through the HOT Tasking Manager:

๐Ÿšง https://tasks.hotosm.org/projects/63235 โ€” Road Mapping: 58% remaining
๐Ÿ  https://tasks.hotosm.org/projects/63236 โ€” Building Mapping: 40% remaining

Every mapped road and building can help responders navigate, plan, and make better-informed decisions on the ground.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Join the mapping effort: https://bit.ly/mapnepalflood

If you can map, map. If you can validate, validate. Every contribution matters. ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ’™

**Salute to Captain Priya and Our Rescue Heroes Working Day and Night**

A couple of years ago, during a glacial lake risk assessment mission led by Prof. Ramesh Kumar Maskey and Dr bhakta kayastha sir , our team had the opportunity to fly with Captain Priya while conducting drone and helicopter-based surveys. We witnessed firsthand her exceptional flying skills, precision, and ability to operate in Nepalโ€™s extremely challenging mountain terrain.

Today, seeing Captain Priya and many other pilots and rescue teams working tirelessly, day and night, in the ongoing rescue operations is deeply inspiring.

Our heartfelt salute to Captain Priya and all our rescue heroes who continue to take extraordinary risks to reach stranded people and save lives.

In response to the devastating floods and mudslides that swept through the Lhende Khola river valley in Nepal, resulting in heavy tolls on lives and critical infrastructure, NAXA, MapBuds, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), and the wider tech community in Nepal are coming together to support evidence-based humanitarian action in line with joint national efforts.

The collaborative effort includes processing drone imagery, mapping and validating affected areas, and using the fAIr platform to map and compare building footprints before and after the floods, helping generate timely information for response and recovery efforts.

On 26 August 2026, devastating floods and mudslides swept through the Lhende Khola river valley, Nepal, resulting in heavy tolls on lives and critical infrastructure. As of 27 August, early reports indicate an estimated 160 casualties and around 1,500 people missing across Nepal and Tibet, with numbers expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.

In response, professionals from NAXA, MapBuds, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, and the wider tech community in Nepal are coming together to support evidence-based humanitarian action in line with joint national efforts.

Two days of learning, discussion, and co-design, and an important step toward building a more practical, responsible, and locally relevant approach to # AI-enabled & assessment for Nepal.

We were honoured to have Professor Dr Jha, Member of the National Planning Commission, deliver the keynote on Nepalโ€™s emerging AI opportunity, and Dr Dharam R Uprety, Chief Executive of NDRRMA, share special remarks on the importance of technology for disaster risk management and loss and damage. Dr Dr. Basanta Raj Adhikari - President of DPNet Nepal, emphasised the importance of localised AI & encouraged stakeholders to share more relevant datasets to strengthen contextual training & develop models better suited to Nepal.

The workshop combined hands-on learning and co-design. Er. Saroj Dahal led practical sessions on using AI; Nishon Tandukar introduced GeoAI and demonstrated the building-damage assessment approach we are experimenting with; and Drabid Subedi discussed responsible AI, ethics, privacy, and accountability. Shrestha presented the distinction between damage assessment and broader loss and damage assessment. Binod Parajuli then facilitated an engaging co-design session, leading discussions on the workflows, functions, & priorities that a comprehensive loss and damage solution should include.
The workshop was co-organised with Disaster Preparedness Network Nepal - DPNet Nepal & brought together 45+ stakeholders from government, humanitarian, development, academic and private-sector institutions. It was conducted under the project โ€œLocalised GeoAI Models for Post-Disaster Damage Assessment Aimed at Enhancing Reconstruction and Development Planning Efforts,โ€ implemented by NAXA, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) and VITA Lab at EPFL.

Special appreciation to the Tech4Dev program under the EssentialTech Centre at EPFL for supporting and funding this initiative. We will now document the workshop sessions, recommendations and co-design findings and share them with all stakeholders, ensuring that these discussions directly inform what we build next.
