Ghatasthapana is one of the significant rituals during Navratri.

🎯During Ghatasthapana, people fill "holy water" in a Kalash (pot).
🎯It marks the beginning of nine days of festivity.
🎯Ghatasthapana is an invocation of Goddess Shakti and doing it wrong time, as our scriptures forewarn, might bring the wrath of the Goddess Shakti.
🎯The Dashain period runs from the “no moon” of the Hindu month of Ashvin and culminates on the full moon of the same month.
🎯The pot is worshipped twice a day, every day till the festival is over, by a family member.
🎯The Kalash is kept from the sunlight, and holy water is added daily. This activity results in a long, yellowish grass growing from the pot called "Jamara."

Many rituals followed during Ghatasthapana are kept private.

How is Janai Purnima Celebrated ?

Brahmins change their Janai (sacred thread) once a year on this day while other Hindus have a sacred thread tied around their wrists. People make themselves ‘clean’ by shaving or cutting hair and taking a good bath. They undergo partial fasting, taking only one meal of foods considered ‘clean’ – no meat, no onions, and garlic.

Why is Janai Purnima celebrated ?

On this day people take a bath in the morning and visit temples where there are pandits who offers Janai. The festival celebrates the bond of pureness and security. Janai means holy thread and Purnima is the full moon. On this day people tie Janai to their wrists via pandits which last for three months. After three months this thread is tied at the tail of a cow at Laxmi Puja.
