Last week, Norwegian news viewers could see Q-Freeโs RUC solution in use during a featured tour of the city of Trondheim, Norway. In the clip - which can be seen here https://lnkd.in/e5QwCMQ4 - our development partner SINTEF, represented by Petter Arnesen, explains how the solution works:
๐๐กRoad User Charging hardware receives satellite signals and calculates distance driven and zones crossed, and how invoicing data is generated based on this. He further explains that personal data such as precise location and time of travel is not included in the data transfer, making this a secure solution with minimal data leaving the vehicle.
Statens vegvesen - Norwegian Public Roads Administration , who have been involved in the eight-year development of the solution, highlight further potential benefits through Erlend Aakre, Director of the Division for Transport and Society.
He states that a Road User Charging system can be perceived as fairer for road users. In addition, it can be a key tool for achieving the Zero Growth Target, which aims to halt the growth in private car transport. The authorities also believe that a dynamic pricing solution can enable more efficient road use by allowing higher prices in specific zones to reduce overall traffic, ease congestion, and manage peak-hour demand.
Towards the end of the clip, the political perspective is addressed, highlighting road pricing as a highly relevant tool for governments seeking fair road pricing and aiming to incentivise increased use of public transport to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. While the implementation of a Road User Charging system in Norway is a political decision, the newscast notes that once approved, nationwide implementation is currently estimated to take only a few years.
