It was June 1969, and a police raid at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of New York was about to change everything.
The raid sparked protests from members of the gay and le***an community in the neighbourhood, and soon the uprisings spread across the USA.
The community’s demands were simple: to be allowed to live freely and openly, without fear of being harassed or arrested on account of their sexuality.
Their actions would prove to be groundbreaking.
A year later, the first Pride marches were held in cities on both sides of the United States – a tradition that continues to this day, and one that we now celebrate throughout June as Pride Month 🌈
