The traffic light system in Norway is one of the most important regulations in all of salmon farming (and frankly the entire aquaculture world) 🐟

Every 2 years the government "re-colors" the country's regions with the goal of limiting the impact of sea lice on wild salmon. The regulation sits at the intersection of business, aquaculture, and environmental issues.🚦

And the 3rd iteration was completed just over a month ago. ✅

Why have prices reached record highs? 👇

Fish feed has always been the highest operational cost to a farmer, and depending on the species, it can range anywhere from 50-70% of the total of the production cost to a farmer, meaning that from all the expenses a farmer needs to analyze, feed is always the number 1 priority. 💸

Since December of 2021, we’ve seen the commodity price of climb steadily almost 30% from $1.4k / metric. ton to the last reported price of $1.8k metric ton.

This is the result of a few different factors 🤔

💡 Post-Treatment Mortality Rates Following in Norway Show Improvement 💡

Effective management of is crucial for farmers, especially during the fall season when the majority of treatments are administered. The most commonly employed method for controlling sea lice involves mechanical treatments carried out by well-boats.

Within the network 📈 we monitor the outcomes of these treatments, particularly focusing on post-treatment mortality rates among fish populations. Our data reveals significant improvements in this area. In 2017, post-treatment mortalities accounted for nearly 2% of the total fish population. However, by 2022, this figure had been substantially reduced to less than 1%, indicating that current treatments are less harmful to fish.
