AI will not "end us all." At least, not yet.
Why should duplicate code from AI code generation be of any relevance to most people. I mean, most people are not software developers, right? And isn't coding all AI now? Who needs a software developer?
You just type in what you want, and the software is generated automatically. Oh, doesn't work exactly as intended? Then have the AI fix it, do a few extra rounds, they say it's easy.
Duplicate code is just one aspect of code generation that shows shortcomings. Often, when generating from scratch there will be redundant duplicate code pieces, that do the same job, but are invoked from different entry points in the ex*****on of the software.
When adding new functionality or extending, duplicate code is usually generated, even if the code to perform a given task is already implemented.
How can duplicate code a problem, then. If the software is seen as just black box, why bother with what's inside. Who cares if the code is slightly larger than necessary, it's not like it will end the world now, is it.
Duplicate code makes it harder to maintain code and difficult to test. If you make a change, toy have to make sure all duplicates also gets the exact same change, and then make sure to test each one.
Duplicate code can be avoided by using code generation in a better way. A good software architecture and structure is key.
AI is great for coding, it just needs a software developer to do software development, with the aid from AI.
No, AI will not "end us all," it is still only software automation tools, that can be used for many applications, one of them being software development.
