Tromsø – Polar Night
Every winter, Tromsø enters one of the most extraordinary periods of the Arctic year.
From around 27 November to 15 January, the Sun remains below the horizon for roughly 50 days. This period is known in Norwegian as mørketid — the dark season.
But “polar night” does not mean complete darkness all day. Around midday, the sky can still glow with beautiful shades of deep blue, pink and purple, creating the famous Arctic twilight. On clear nights, the darkness also provides ideal conditions for seeing the Northern Lights.
Then, slowly, the light begins to return. By mid-January, the Sun starts its journey back above the horizon, marking one of the most anticipated moments of the northern winter.
❄️🌌 No sunrise for weeks — yet the Arctic is anything but colourless.
