INVISIBLE WOMEN
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the way women have been silenced, suppressed and overlooked throughout history. And how, in many many parts of the world, they still are.
Women who were never allowed to make their own choices. Whose talents went unrecognised, whose voices were silenced, whose lives were controlled by men. Women who were punished, abused or even killed for wanting to live on their own terms.
It’s a subject that has fascinated me for most of my life. There are personal reasons for that, too, which I may share another time.
And it’s what inspired my new series of oil paintings: Invisible Women.
The women in these paintings are both visible and invisible.
You can see them, but you can’t quite reach them. They’re beautiful, mysterious, sometimes almost dreamlike. There’s something about them that makes you want to keep looking. To come a little closer. To find out who they are.
But what goes on behind those faces?
What are they thinking? What are they feeling? What have they experienced? What are they hiding? What have they never been allowed to say?
We can look at a woman, admire her beauty, study every detail of her face, and still know absolutely nothing about the world she carries inside her.
I find that endlessly fascinating.
With these paintings, I want to explore that strange space between visibility and invisibility. Between what we see on the outside and everything that remains hidden underneath.
I want you to look at these women. To be drawn to their beauty, their mystery, their presence. And then, perhaps, to start wondering about the person behind the face.
Because being visible doesn’t necessarily mean being seen.
And I think there’s a world of difference between being looked at and being truly seen.
More soon.
