“AR is IoT for people”

When factory workers use Augmented reality, they’re connecting to all the power of data and analytics in the cloud, as machines in factories have done for decades.

Before technology can be deployed, however, enterprises need to give careful consideration to their specific use cases, as the same set of technologies can be applied in different ways and can solve for multiple challenges.

There is a wide range of enterprise AR use cases driving a long list of technology requirements. To succeed with AR, enterprises need to think about an enterprise AR suite approach. That’s why we’re introducing the framework for how to think about enterprise AR, made up of 15 questions across three categories: strategy, content, and delivery.

"The first time people don the new HoloLens 2 on their heads, the device automatically gets to know them: It measures everything from the precise shape of their hands to the exact distance between their eyes."

It enables knowledge exchange through a mixed reality of people, places and things. Thanks to the integration of Azure, HoloLens 2 now enables workers to learn much easier with heads-up and hands-on instructions.

Growing need of upskilling and reskilling

One thing is clear: Everyone, whatever their age, will at some point have to spend time either re-skilling (learning new skills for a new position) or upskilling (learning current tasks more deeply).

The challenge is that old-style notions of training are far too slow and relatively expensive.

Corporations have begun using this training at scale. Tacit knowledge of how to perform a task is often held in the minds of experienced workers. or many organizations, there’s an opportunity to capture this knowledge and pass it on. Augmented reality tools supplement this conversation. Here are three frontier examples that, although different in their approaches, together begin to set the scene for what could become a full-scale transformation in training.

Bridging the gap between humans and machines

McKinsey estimates that less than 5% of jobs consist of activities that are 100% automatable. Humans are still needed for activities such as quality control and machine operations. Though, tasks such as heavy-lifting or some production processes that are repetitive can easily be automated. Tasks that are not fully automatable, will still benefit from digitalization in terms of accuracy and lead times.

Future work will be different from now. Work will then be a mix of human conducted tasks and machine conducted tasks.

Augmented Reality is the next-generation human-machine interface in bridging workflow gaps and maximizes efficiencies of both human and machine interactions. will increasingly be the tool for front-line workers to interact with the wealth of digitized information.

The industrial internet of things and augmented reality are driving the convergence of humans and machines to usher in the collaborative future of work. Learn more in this blog.

Our developer Jefferson Scomaçao will speak about the lessons we have learned during the implementation of AR by Unity into IKEA’s native mobile app ‘IKEA Place’, during the MixUG October event tomorrow.

He'll tell more about the whole process from designing to developing the app and the challenges we’ve had to overcome. Jefferson will also explain more about the experiment that took place before developing AR into the native mobile app.

Would like to attend the event? There still are some (free) spots left. For more information and registering: http://www.mixug.com/mixug-evenement-oktober-2019/
